MLB: September 2017

Does anyone know how to find this stat?

About a month ago, one of the Yankee broadcasters mentioned that teams facing the Yankees had committed around 120 errors. The team in second only had about 90 committed against them. For the life of me, I don’t know how to look it up.

If they hope to beat the Cubs, they should be able to beat the Phillies.

Cubs win the division! Cubs win the division! Cubs win the division!

It’s been a wacky and unusual season in baseball. I came across this entertaining piece on espn.com and thought it worth sharing:

27 Head Scratching Plot Holes.

Something that jumped out at me was the case of Albert Pujols and the way we look at stats today. By every measure, Pujols has below replacement offensive WAR, yet once upon a time, we would have seen the 23 home runs and 100 RBI and considered it a solid season.

Thanks for linking that, a good fun article.

Hey folks, make sure you check out today’s MLB.com Free Game of the Day! It’s the 70-89 Padres versus the 62-97 Giants! You don’t want to miss this thrilling intra-divisional clash between two teams that just barely missed out on the division crown (by a paltry 32 and 40 games, respectively).
Normally I’d be glued to the television myself for a spectacle like this…but I’ve gotta go to Costco tonight.

You joke, but I’ll be there in person tonight. Possibly in a Dodger jersey, but I digress…

Let me just say that I am happy my Cubs didn’t manage to stink the year up entirely after winning the World Series. They’re even on a bit of a roll, heading into the playoffs!

Trivia: this is the first time that there have been three 100-win teams in a season, and none of those teams was the New York Yankees.

Also, this is the Astros’ second 100-win season; they are likely to finish with the third-best record in the majors. The last time they won more than 100 games, they had the third-best record in the majors (102 wins in 1998).

I really like this picture of Greg Bird.

And the Yankees have the same run differential as the Astros, and bigger than the Dodgers.

What is perhaps interesting to note is that in 2003, none of the 100-win teams won the World Series.

Interestingly, there will be no 100-LOSS teams this year. In 2003 there was one, but they were a doozy, the Tigers at 43-119.
