Anyway, while the Jays are having a terrible year, it’s fun to see the kids play in September, and occasionally do something cool; the wonderfully named Rowdy Tellez his a double in each of his first three MLB at bats. He is, as a result, the only player in the history of the big leagues - at least since 1920, anyway - to hit any sort of extra base hit in his first three at bats.
He then hit his fourth double in his fifth major league at bat, also a unique accomplishment.
Incidentally, Rowdy Tellez looks exactly how you’d imagine a man named Rowdy Tellez would look. He looks more like a defensive end than a baseball player. He’s 6’4" and claims to weigh 220 pounds but he’s more like 250. His mother died just two weeks ago and his Dad couldn’t make his first games because of travel delays, but he sure made up for it when his dad made it to Game 2.
Biggest news on the Tiger broadcast front since they fired Ernie Harwell. The television crew is but a shadow of the days when they had George Kell and Al Kaline- not THAT was a broadcast team.
I have never heard this team. Articles I have read have said when they were in tune, it was a great show. Then there were times when there was friction. Which is real, no?
Sorry it had to escalate to violence. Hope it works out for everyone.
Incredibly stupid of the Cubs to put Lester out there last night in the rain cancelled game. They’ve finally started the doubleheader today and this looks ugly.
I think it’s fun. And they did it in the dugout, so if there’s any whining from the Red Sox, they need to get over it (I haven’t seen any). MLB players needs to lighten on many fronts - I like seeing stuff like this.
Also, there’s a fun game going on in Minnesota right now. KC’s Lopez has pitched to 24 batters. We’re in the top of the 9th now.
Not a good day for the Cubs. Double header due to the rain last night, the first game was delayed and the Cubs got stomped anyway. Now, it’s the top of the 8th, pouring rain, and the Cubs are behind.
I assume they’ll suspend the game and finish it up tomorrow before the regularly scheduled day game. Still, the Cubs shouldn’t be losing two to the Nationals who have punted on the season.
I didn’t watch Game 2 but the Cubs had 3 errors in Game 1 and were throwing the ball all over the place. Not the kind of performance you’d want to bring into the playoffs.
As noted above by Munch, Jorge Lopez of the Royals retired the first 24 batters he faced. Alas, he opened the ninth by walking the leadoff batter and then allowed a solid single up the middle. He was then relieved by Wily Peralta who retired the 3 batters he faced, although he did give up a sacrifice fly in KC’s 4-1 victory.
Lopez was acquired by the Royals in late July in the Mike Moustakas trade.
The Red Sox are the first team to clinch a post season spot, not particularly surprising. Magic Number is 9, which shouldn’t be a problem with with Sox-Yankees nothing is ever safe.
With 99 wins and 17 remaining games, the Red Sox will have to win out to match the record number of wins in a season. So that’s not gonna happen. But that’s OK. I’m still pleased (and pretty surprised) with their level of success.
On another note, has **RickJay **weighed in on the “controversy” surrounding the Josh Donaldson deal to Cleveland? If so, sorry I missed it. But if not, I’m curious what Jays fans’ thoughts are.
The Jays could have given him a qualifying offer and either received a compensatory pick if he walked or gotten another year out of him with the chance to rebuild his value if he signed. Instead, if the rumours are true, they chose to receive a minor-league pitcher coming off TJ surgery who wasn’t all that impressive before the surgery anyway. I don’t get the logic, myself.
My question about the Donaldson deal is more about the controversy related to his “health” at the time of the deal. A player, by rule, has to be healthy to be placed on revocable waivers. Donaldson hadn’t played since May. The Indians picked him up and immediately put him on the 10 day DL. So how was he healthy? How did MLB approve this? The Red Sox, Astros and Yankees complained to MLB about this deal.
I don’t quite understand this. They weren’t getting him in any case if the Indians claimed him because they could only claim him after the Indians as it goes in reverse order of record. And rosters were expanding so it didn’t really matter whether the Indians put him on the DL.
