There’s no tying in baseball!
Used to be though and these are two of the oldest teams.
Indeed. Particularly in the days before stadium lights, games were called when it got too dark to continue playing.
A quick Google suggests that old-time tie games were often played over in their entirety and that the last MLB tie game was in 1916.
Does that sound right? I could have sworn there were more recent tie games.
There was that weird All Star game in 2002.
And the weird one in 2025.
Juan Soto made his first error of the season today. Has any everyday player ever had an errorless season?
Steve Garvey did in the 80s. I think there were a few others.
ETA: Steve Garvey had an errorless season in 1984 with the San Diego Padres, playing 159 games without committing a single error.
From Google AI:
Ryne Sandberg had a 123-game errorless streak at second base for the Chicago Cubs from June 21, 1989, to May 17, 1990, during which he handled 584 chances without committing an error. This was a Major League Baseball record for a second baseman at the time, surpassing Joe Morgan’s previous mark of 91 games. His streak ended on May 18, 1990, in Houston against the Astros.
ChatGPT led me to look up Placido Polanco on baseball-reference. During the 2007 season, Polanco played 141 games at second base for the Tigers without committing an error.
Don’t know if this qualifies, as Polanco missed about 13% of the total number of games.
The record for errorless games by an outfielder is north of 400.
Sadly, this reminds me that Aaron Judge never committed an error playing center. Until game 5 of the 2024 World Series. I know that doesn’t count, but still.
Very good night to be a Mariners fan.
And Cal now has the franchise HR record for Seattle.
Things are getting really interesting as we approach the final week of the season, especially in the American League.
Cleveland swept the Twins in a doubleheader today (shutouts in both games), and has won 10 in a row. Meanwhile, Detroit lost to the Braves today, their fifth consecutive loss. Guardians are now just one game behind the Tigers in the AL Central.
Blue Jays have now lost four in a row; the Yankees trail Toronto by two games in the AL East. Boston is four back.
Seattle won again over Houston and now lead the Astros by two games in the AL West. Mariners, I believe, have won 11 of their last 12.
Yankees lead Boston by 2 games in the AL wild card race. Red Sox are just a game ahead of Cleveland and Houston.
Detroit travels to Cleveland for a 3-game series starting Tuesday, then finishes the season with 3 in Fenway. Guardians finish the season hosting Texas for 3 games.
Mariners finish with 2 home series facing Colorado and the Dodgers. Houston hosts the A’s and Angels to end the season.
Blue Jays finish by hosting Boston and Tampa Bay. Yanks also have two home series, against the White Sox and Orioles.
Should be a fun week.
Milwaukee beat St. Louis in extra innings tonight, while the Cubs and Phillies both lost.
This means that the Brewers’ magic number for the NL Central crown is down to 1, and their magic number for clinching home field advantage in the NL playoffs over the Phillies is 4.
Giancarlo Stanton hit his 450th career home run tonight.
And Mike Trout finally got #400; it has been a nice night for home-run milestones.
And now the Hall of Fame debate gets triggered again for him. I think he will need 500 to get in.
Edit: Jusr noticed that the official MLB instagram didn’t mention Stanton but did mention Trout.
I believe it’s functionally a three game lead, since Seattle won the seasonal matchup and thus owns the tiebreaker should it come to that.
Yeah they have the tiebreaker thanks to last night’s win. That game was critical for determining the division.
Nothing is clinched but it’s getting down to the wire.
Houston must be hurting right now. After sweeping Texas I bet they were feeling pretty good about beating up on Seattle and their chances for the postseason. They still might pull it out, but as of now, they’re out of the playoffs.
