Milwaukee loses to St. Louis, 5-1, in pitcher Robert Gasser’s first start in 16 months, coming back from Tommy John surgery.
However, as the Brewers entered the day with a magic number of 1, and the Cubs lost to the Reds, 1-0, Milwaukee wins the NL Central for the third consecutive season; it’s the first time in franchise history that they have won their division three times in a row.
Actually Cleveland and Houston are tied for the 3rd wild card with Cleveland owning the tiebreaker over Houston. Boston is 1 up on Cleveland and Houston.
Astros will be playing the Athletics and Angels to close out the season. I wonder if those teams are just going to be playing halfhearted games, having been eliminated, or if they’ll relish the idea of playing spoiler against a division rival that’s desperately trying to earn a postseason spot.
The Brewers only need a combination of 3 wins (or 3 Phillies losses) to cinch the #1 NL playoff seed. However, Milwaukee’s remaining games are against two teams fighting for wild-card spots (the Padres and Reds), while Philadelphia finishes up with the staying-home-for-October Marlins and Twins.
As @Procrustus said, the magic number for the Mariners is 3. Any combination of three or more wins by them and/or three or more losses by the Astros will win Seattle the division for the first time since 2001.
I like their chances because they are playing the remaining games at home, and they are 48-27 at home. Also, they close out in a home series against the worst team in baseball.
The Astros are on the road against two division rivals and are missing key players to injury.
Politics aside, are players normally excused to attend funerals of non-family members.? Is he still paid for the day he missed? The article doesn’t even mention whether or not he had permission from the team.
They might make an exception, but generally, no they aren’t. If they were childhood friends I could maybe see it.
Shit, the Yankees played after attending a service for Thurman Munson, their Captain. Bobby Murcer, his best friend on the team had a great night at the plate as I recall.
