MLB: September 2025

Milwaukee loses to St. Louis, 5-1, in pitcher Robert Gasser’s first start in 16 months, coming back from Tommy John surgery.

However, as the Brewers entered the day with a magic number of 1, and the Cubs lost to the Reds, 1-0, Milwaukee wins the NL Central for the third consecutive season; it’s the first time in franchise history that they have won their division three times in a row.

Yankees-Orioles: nothing happening all game. 1-1 going into the 10th. Then a grand slam for Rice and two extra runs added on. Yankees win 7-1.

Blue Jays won to keep a 2 game lead.

How did the Jays do?

Red Sox play tonight; Yanks lead the Sox by 2 1/2 in the wild card.

7th inning, Altuve gets a third strike that was fully in the strike zone, and it was called a ball.

Then he swings and misses. It’s called a ball.

We need robot umpires because I don’t think humans can handle a strike zone or player so small.

And suddenly the Mariners have the largest divisional lead in the AL, at 3 games over the Astros.

Jays still lead the Yanks by two, while Detroit’s lead stays at 1 over Cleveland.

Red Sox and Guardians are tied for the 3rd wild card. Red Sox have the tiebreaker over Cleveland.

Actually Cleveland and Houston are tied for the 3rd wild card with Cleveland owning the tiebreaker over Houston. Boston is 1 up on Cleveland and Houston.

Yes, my bad. Thanks for the catch.

And in the NL, the Red and Mets are now tied for the 3rd wild card, with the Reds owning the tiebreaker.

Astros will be playing the Athletics and Angels to close out the season. I wonder if those teams are just going to be playing halfhearted games, having been eliminated, or if they’ll relish the idea of playing spoiler against a division rival that’s desperately trying to earn a postseason spot.

I think every team in the AL West likes to beat the Astros. Should be interesting. Mariners’ magic number is 3.

True; not only is it a division rival, it’s the Astros.

The Brewers only need a combination of 3 wins (or 3 Phillies losses) to cinch the #1 NL playoff seed. However, Milwaukee’s remaining games are against two teams fighting for wild-card spots (the Padres and Reds), while Philadelphia finishes up with the staying-home-for-October Marlins and Twins.

Everybody has 2 3-game series left to play. Remaining schedules:

AL:

Blue Jays: vs Red Sox, vs Rays
Yankees: vs White Sox, vs Orioles
Red Sox: @ Blue Jays, vs Tigers

Tigers: @ Guardians, @ Red Sox
Guardians, vs Tigers, vs Rangers

Astros: @ A’s, @ Angels
Mariners: vs Rockies, vs Dodgers

NL:

Phillies: vs Marlins, vs Twins
Mets: @ Cubs, @ Marlins

Brewers: @ Padres, vs Reds
Cubs: vs Mets, vs Cardinals
Reds: vs Pirates, @ Brewers

Dodgers: @ Diamondbacks, @ Mariners
Padres: vs Brewers, vs Diamondbacks
Diamondbacks: vs Dodgers, @ Padres

As @Procrustus said, the magic number for the Mariners is 3. Any combination of three or more wins by them and/or three or more losses by the Astros will win Seattle the division for the first time since 2001.

I like their chances because they are playing the remaining games at home, and they are 48-27 at home. Also, they close out in a home series against the worst team in baseball.

The Astros are on the road against two division rivals and are missing key players to injury.

Matt Shaw skips a game to go to Charlie Kirk’s funeral.

A rookie takes a game off with the Cubs still in a pennant race?

Quick note, if anyone wants to reply to this in any way not baseball, start a new thread in P&E or the Pit.

That is actually the best method.

Politics aside, are players normally excused to attend funerals of non-family members.? Is he still paid for the day he missed? The article doesn’t even mention whether or not he had permission from the team.

They might make an exception, but generally, no they aren’t. If they were childhood friends I could maybe see it.

Shit, the Yankees played after attending a service for Thurman Munson, their Captain. Bobby Murcer, his best friend on the team had a great night at the plate as I recall.

It looks like they did in this case, if People is to be believed.

Chicago Cubs rookie Matt Shaw was given a rare exemption by his team to attend the memorial of Charlie Kirk.

It was a one game exemption, and he’s expected to be back tomorrow to play.

For the first time since April 5th the Mets are no longer in a playoff position. Their collapse is almost complete.
