This afternoon, the Cubs, still clinging to slim hopes of catching up to the Brewers and winning the NL Central, but more likely trying to position for a wild card berth, blew out the Pirates, 12-2.
This evening, the Brewers crushed the Reds, 20-0; Milwaukee got 23 hits, while only giving up two hits. In the process, the Brewers become the first NL team to clinch a playoff spot (the Rays clinched the first AL berth a bit earlier in the evening).
The Yanks have been playing excellent ball overall and even hitting more. 7-3 over the last 10. But they’ve only gain 1 game on Tampa. So still down 3 but with a 4 game set coming up.
On the bright side the Red Sox went 5-5 and lost the last 3 and are now 5.5 behind the Yanks. They’re still secure for the Wildcard though with a 7 game margin.
But the Sox are getting injury problems, I’m not happy with how they’re headed to the playoffs. Still, compared to May/June I’m thrilled.
The Brewers also became the first team to post two 20-run shutouts in the same season. And, less than a week after the Yankees finally hit their first grand slam of the season, Milwaukee hit their first last night.
A night after beating the Reds 20-0, the Brewers got another football-style score tonight, winning 13-9. The 33 combined runs in consecutive games set a team record for Milwaukee; meanwhile, the Reds had lost to the Dodgers 14-1 on Wednesday, and the combined 47 runs allowed over three games was the most which Cincinnati had given up since 1901.
Tampa (already clinched post season), NYY, and BOS, the top three teams in the AL East, are on track to clinch a post season spot before any other teams in the AL. If TOR can catch Cleveland, we would have 4 AL East teams in the post season.

Two Immaculate Innings in the past 3 days, first Justin Martinez from Arizona on 9/11 and now Payton Tolle of the Red Sox today. Tolle’s was in the 1st inning, which hasn’t happened since 2008.
Surprisingly, Vladimir Guerrero, Junior hit his first home run of the season at his home park today. Of course, his power numbers have been down this season; that’s only his 9th of the year.

Their lead over the Dodgers for the top seed in the NL is at 2.5 games.
Gotham Schlitty looks like he’s got to clear space on his mantel for his Cy Young, and MVP isn’t out of reach. If he isn’t on the team, no playoffs this year.
