Well, considering that they had been unlucky for most of the season (one big reason for their current winning streak is that their standard deviation of runs scored has dropped drastically), I don’t consider the current winning streak to be any sort of big deal in the sense you are suggesting.
Yep. As i said in an earlier post, the Red Sox should have an even bigger lead than they currently do, based on runs scored and conceded.
They’ve just won three games in a row against the Orioles, and have scored 5 runs in each game, which is about a half-run LESS than their season average. Only a minor catastrophe, a la 2011, can stop the Red Sox winning the East now.
A few days ago, i told myself that if the Orioles could take 3 out of 4 against Boston, they’d still be in with a shot of winning the division, but Boston has now won the first three, leaving Baltimore right back in the thick of what is probably a six-team race for the two Wild Card spots.
I wouldn’t be betting on the Birds seeing any postseason play and, to be honest, they don’t really deserve to make it. Apart from dingers, they don’t really do that much. And now their home run production has slowed. For a long time this season, they were on track to catch the Mariners’ single-season record, but now they’d need 26 homers in their last 10 games.
Man, I’m going to be in fucking tears the last time I hear “Goodnight, everybody!”
To my admitted surprise, Toronto has a winning record against New York and Baltimore, and is even against Boston.
The team they can’t beat in the East is Tampa Bay.
I seriously got weepy reading the linked article. Wasn’t quite the same in the last few years, but I remember fondly, particularly in the 90s (and obviously this was going on much earlier than that) sitting in the stands hoping to be close to someone who had brought a radio with them. And eventually, I started bringing my own radio. Everyone seemed to be pleased with having access to Vin in the stadium.
You know, it might make sense to start a Vin Scully appreciation thread.
I went ahead and created one: Vin Scully Appreciation Thread.
Well, the Orioles gave him a pretty nice gift. Well, a gift, at least. It’s a little weird that they held onto that thing for three years, but whatever.
Fivethirtyeight reckons that the 2016 Cincinnati Reds have the worst pitching in major league history —The Reds’ Pitching Might Be The Worst Of All Time | FiveThirtyEight
Orioles backup catcher Caleb Joseph is about to set a MLB history record for the first player to have at last 100 at bats in a season without an RBI.
From the article:
“I am sickened that anyone could take my racist rantings and conclude that i might be a fucking racist asshole. My tweets were reactionary, just like my politics, and my biggest mistake was hanging my redneck ass out for the whole world to see.”
That’s what you get when you’re a small market team and the pitcher you decide to back up Brinks truck for is Homer Bailey. They are not a well run team in general, having been forced to trade away almost every player with an ounce of talent at the worst possible time when they have no leverage.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the worst ball call in the history of the game. Scroll down to see a gif that confirms that’s not a PitchFX bug: the call really was that bad.
For a fun non-vin scully moment at the Dodgers games tonight after the Padres came back from down 6-0 to tie the Giants they put the score up on the big screen at the stadium. The Dodgers were up 8-0 at the time and I watched 20+ people around pull out their phones to bring up the Giants game on their phones. After the Dodgers wrapped their game they actually put the Giants up on the big screen for us to watch. Unfortunately the Giants pulled it out in the 10th but I’ve never gotten to watch a baseball game on TV at the ball park before.
Hopefully we clench tomorrow so I can listen to Vin call it.
With the Nats’ 6-1 win over the Pirates, and the Mets’ 10-8 loss to the Phillies, the Nationals have clinched their third division title in the last five years.
All three of those titles were won under a different manager, which is the first time in history that’s happened.
The Mets were down 10-0 against the Phillies, pulled many of their starters, and just about came back to win, the magnificent bastards.
Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident. He was 24.
I just saw the news about Fernandez, I hope like hell alcohol wasn’t involved.
A separate thread has been started here regarding Jose Fernandez. Not that I think it’s inappropriate to discuss in here; just wanted folks to be aware. As there will probably be a lot of conversation about that over the next few days, I certainly think it warrants its own thread.
Criminy, Mets, couldn’t you have saved some of those 17 runs you scored against the Phillies today for later on? That’s about 6 games worth of typical Mets’ offense.
Dodgers walk it off and win the division! And the players pause their celebration to join the crowd in saying goodbye to Vin. Absolutely perfect.
