MLB: September/October Regular Season 2022

Some drama in the Braves/Mets game. Atlanta took a 5-2 lead into the top of the 9th at home, but New York managed to load the bases. New York’s last hitter fouled off 6 pitches in his 9-pitch at-bat before finally being retired on strikes.

Braves win, and pull into a tie with the Mets again for first place in the NL East with five games left to play in the season. The Braves and Mets will play each other twice more in this series.

And if they split those 2 games, they’ll end tied. What happens then? Is it still a one game playoff or are there tie-breakers now?

It’s my understanding it’s tie-breakers now. When the Cardinals clinched at least a tie for the NL Central, the tie-breaker against the Brewers (head to head record) meant the Cards automatically won the division.

And the Mets hold a 9-7 advantage over the Braves. So a split would leave the Mets on top.

Exactly what the Baseball Tonight guys said. Braves have to sweep to gain the advantage.

Brewers and Phillies both won tonight, so Philadelphia remains 1/2 game ahead of Milwaukee for the last NL WC spot. Phillies were supposed to play a doubleheader with the Nats, but the second game was rained out. So now they are scheduled to play two tomorrow.

Dodgers clinched the best record in the league and will have home field advantage all the way through the World Series should they get that far.

Pujols hit #701.

wow i bet tis are sold out all ready

The Mariners clinch there first playoff birth since 2001 in dramatic fashion, a bottom of the 9th, 2 out home run by Cal Raliegh. There is a party in the streets around T-Mobile Park in Seattle right now.

Cal is so awesome.

You gotta think anyone with the nickname “The Big Dumper” is going to be a guy you want to have a beer with. (I mean, it’s definitely not this guy on the Yankees that poured a beer directly down Nestor Cortes’ pants when they clinched.)

Shall we just finish up the regular season here and then move to Playoff thread?

Braves take the Division lead tonight on a 4-2 win. In two days, they’ve beat both Scherzer and DeGrom. They’re now tied head-to-head. Tomorrow is winner-take-all to set the playoffs!

I’ll adjust the thread title.

So, for whatever stupid reason, I thought today was the end of the regular season. Oops. So here’s how it shakes out.

American League
Astros, Yankees, and Cleveland are locked for Division and are set as the 1, 2, 3 seeds respectively. Nothing that happens now can change that.

Toronto, Seattle, and Tampa Bay are locked as the wild cards, but order matters.
Blue Jays are +3 and play BoSox today, Orioles on Mon/Tues.
Seattle are +1.5 and play Oakland today, Detroit on Mon/Tues x2.
Tampa Bay are 0 and play Houston today, BoSox on Mon/Tues.

National League
Dodgers and Cards are locked and are set as the 1 and 3 seeds respectively.
Braves and Mets are in, but still fighting for the Division.
Braves are +1 with Mets today, Miami on Mon/Tues
Mets are -1 with Braves today, Nationals on Mon/Tues
They are combo-locked as far as seeding. Division winner is 2, wildcard is 4

Other wildcard spots will go to 2 of Padres, Phillies, Brewers. Seeding up in the air.
Padres are +2 with ChiSox today, Giants on Mon/Tue.
Phillies are 0 with Nationals today, Houston on Mon/Tue.
Brewers are -1 with Marlins today, Diamondback on Mon/Tue.

The last games of the regular season take place on Wednesday. All of your ‘Mon/Tues’ should be changed to ‘Mon/Tues/Wed’.

It bears repeating that the Mets have the tiebreaker over the Braves. Whoever wins that division will get the first-round bye, so today’s game is huge.

Actually, the winner of today’s game has the tie-breaker. Head-to-head is 9-9 as of last night.

DAMMIT mlb.com! I didn’t realize that it only showed 3 days at a time. I should have realized that they wouldn’t have everybody end with a 2 game set. So add one game to all of the Mon/Tues matchups above.

Good catch, and my bad!

Pujols hit #702 today and tied Babe Ruth for #2 on the all time list of most RBIs.

The Phillies/Nationals game was called because of rain after six innings, with Philly leading 8-1. Meanwhile, the Brewers scored single runs in the 8th and 9th to send their game against the Marlins into extra innings. Both teams scored a run in the 10th and went scoreless in the 11th. Marlins are now batting in the 12th.

If it makes you feel better it was the last day of the season before the lockout moved things.

So is that the reason why the Royals are playing at Cleveland in the last six games of the season?
