MLB: The Playoffs

Well said!

I want a 7-game series featuring close games, great defense, and clutch hitting. I’ll probably root for the Diamondbacks, but I’ve got nothing against the Rangers (aside from the fact that they’re from Texas, of course.)

I will pay limited attention to this series. I have watched some portion of every World Series since some time in the 60s but rarely paid close attention to all of the games except when the Phillies made it there and maybe the Sox vs. Cards in 2013. Even in that one my interest was fading fast after they beat the Yankees {spit}.

What I learned from this thread: Toronto is big market. @RickJay made a comment about the Jays being a big-market team, so I looked it up. Toronto is the fourth-largest city in North America, and the metropolitan area has over 6 million people, ranking it ahead of the Phoenix and Boston metro areas.

The DFW and Phoenix metro areas are among the top ten in the US, so this series shouldn’t be a ratings bomb by population numbers alone. I suspect some other factors at play.

What I’m struck by is how good the ratings were for the games in the early '70s, which were all day games. I remember walking home from school and watching the Oakland A’s playing in the afternoon.

The Blue Jays are an interesting market not just because Toronto is huge, but because I believe they also have media rights across all of Canada. You give every moose a TV, and that’s a pretty big ratings boost!

The highest rated World Series ever played were in 1978, which makes sense because it was Yankees-Dodgers, and 1980, which doesn’t, because it was Phillies-Royals.

Finding ratings today is much more difficult because people don’t watch TV like they used to.

Hey man, the Yankees didn’t even make the postseason in 2013.

I guess I’m rooting for the Rangers in the first ever state-names world series, mostly for Jordan Montgomery. Go Gumby!

SNAKES ON A PLANE!

I’m happy as a Rangers fan because I don’t particularly mind the outcome; losing to the Rattlesnakes would be a lot more tolerable than losing to the Phillies or watching the Astros in the WS again

The Rangers are the oldest franchise to never win the World Series. Actually, I think they might be the oldest franchise in any major North American sport to never win a championship. (There are older NFL teams that have never won a Super Bowl, but which did win an NFL championship game.) I’d say they’re rather overdue.

Yes, the pain of 2011 still bites hard. Twice one strike away.

If they do win, it will mean the Curse of Bob Short has finally worn off. Which I guess, after 50 years and a title in 2019, I’m finally ok with.

Oh, Bob Short is known around here. I wonder if that’s why the Timberwolves are so terrible…

One heckuva game going on in Texas tonight.

ETA: And it’s over in the 11th! Rangers tie it in the ninth and walk it off in the 11th.

Quite the Texas Rangers comeback tonight!

That reminds me of something…

That was an amazing game to watch.

What a game two so far! Monster eighth inning.

Marte now holds the longest hitting streak inn the post season at 18 games.

Those banana kids were cracking me up.

Heh, the MLB site reported the Diamondbacks win thus:

Snakes on a plane to Arizona with Fall Classic all tied up:slightly_smiling_face:

Kelly was amazing.

Rangers take 2-1 lead, alas, at a steep price with key injuries, most of all to Adolis Garcia.
