MLB Website that tells me who was traded for who?

Or is that “whom was traded for whom?”

I’d like to be able to quickly find out who was traded for who in Baseball. Example: I know the Cards got Edgar Renteria from the Marlins, but was he a free agent? Trade? If a trade, who’d we give up for him?

That sort of thing. I’d also like to look up old classic bad trades, like Bagwell for Larry Anderson. (Let’s not have BoSox fans come in here and hijack please? It was just an example…)

I don’t know if the info is instant but ESPN.COM might have some pretty timely info.

Oh, I live on ESPN.COM.

Unfortunately there’s no player trade history there - I can look up a specific player’s career statistics, which shows me what team he played on in that year, but nothing about how that player was acquired…

ESPN will give you trades of the past year or so, but nothing beyond that.

The Baseball Archive and Baseball-Reference.com don’t do trades right now, either. :frowning:

I think some of the individual team pages will show a history of the club, including transactions. But they don’t all do this.

The edition of the Baseball Encyclopedia that I have has a complete transaction history of baseball, back to at least the mid 1910s. It’s a kind of outdated edition, though, so it only goes up to 1992 or so. Check your local library for a newer edition.

They didn’t make another Baseball Encyclopedia after that year I believe. Total Baseball took over that market. Now both publications are out of business.

The Sporting News registers usually have that information in them.

As for Renteria, he was acquired in a trade by the Marlins to the Cardinals for Alfredo Almanza, Braden Looper, and Pablo Ozuna.

dooku,

i personally don’t know of any websites that have a transactions list that goes back any great length of time. http://www.baseballprimer.com/to/ only goes back to 2001.

and as for edgar renteria, the cardinals acquired him in a trade. while i don’t remember eveybody the cardinals sent to the marlins, i do know that one of the players was braden looper.

good luck in finding the site you’re looking for. if you find one, post it here for the rest of us. i know i’d like to have access to a site like that.

BaseballLibrary.com has a Baseball Chronology that includes most trades. If you search for Edgar Renteria you’ll find:

As an aside, the Marlins thought they were getting a younger player in Ozuna, but it turns out he’s older than Renteria.

That site is treeeemendous! Welcome BaseballLibrary.com to my Favorites, and welcome to the boards, Petey!!

Thanks everyone else for their help.
