ISTM that this Mod Note is based on a misunderstanding. As pkbites points out, the “you” is the generic “you” in the traffic stop, not anyone in the thread. Reading it in context I think makes it clear.
But that isn’t what happened. At this point the discussion was about whether lying to a cop about a crime is itself a crime. It was posited that you (generic) can say “no” without it creating an additional chargeable offense. PK bites suggests an alternative that you (still generic) instead just say nothing.
Someone reported the post as an accusation of lying, and with that bias in mind, I obviously misunderstood the intent of the post. My mistake. Please disregard the note.
So shame someone for misinterpreting a post because they didn’t put together the context? That seems like the wrong sort of ignorance fighting to me.
And, no, it wasn’t me. For one thing, the thread didn’t interest me. For another, I don’t tend to report posts. It has to get so bad that I’m willing to send the mods a full message.
Seems to me a potentially powerful teaching moment to at least try to recognize the context. If it turned out to be me, I’d fully expect mockery as the price of carelessness.
They didn’t just misinterpret the post, they reported it. If you’re going to report posts you should put a little more time into the interpretation. And more so for the mods before acting on a report.
Really? If I were pkbites or Loach I would find it hard to contribute to threads about law enforcement as it is, since so often they are addressed as stand-ins for other, often terrible, LEOs. Meanwhile their contributions are incredibly valuable because they can give a perspective not otherwise available to us. In addition, I have found especially Loach a clear example of what LEOs should be like.
The comment above is unnecessary because it adds nothing, is not funny, and it potentially hurts the exchange of ideas which this board is often so very good at.
