I just got a new dell 4100 computer with 56k 3com modem upgrade, but now I can only connect at 28k. Before with my brand x modem I was connecting at 44k. Is there anything I can do?
Yes. Double check your complete modem and IO set up and make sure you haven’t limited either to 28.8. If that doesn’t work, read the modem manual. If that doesn’t work, check with your ISP. It is possible that your new modem doesn’t work with the ISP’s modems as well as your old one did (BTW, why not just use the old modem?) but there may be something you can do about it.
Is your new modem a winmodem? If it is, was your previous modem also a windmodem?
Your lines simply may not be capable handling a faster speed either. When I lived in Vancouver, my modem would connect at 44.4 or something, then when I moved to another apartment it would NEVER get faster than 28.8. The phone co said it was something about the type of lines in that neighborhood.
