Whenever I happen to read threads where people are complaining, exalting, or otherwise offering opinions regarding the SDMB (like this one), I’m always surprised at how often individual moderators or vague notions of “moderation quality” are cited. Whether it is in a positive or negative light.
I’ve been here for a few years now. I post regularly, including a fair amount of OPs, and I have had basically no interaction with the mods that differs in any way to any interaction that I have with other posters. There’s a low level of “cool…a mod posted in my thread, or responded to my post” on those rare occasions that our paths cross, and I’ve had a thread or two moved to a more appropriate forum (both at my request and otherwise) but such encounters are very few and far between, for me.
Maybe it is my posting/reading “style” that keeps such crossing of paths at a minimum (read: maybe I’m tame and boring), but I am curious as to what drives such different views on the mods from my own.
Hmm, Cookies, we seem to have a problem here. I see you’ve got a little thread going on here. Nice. Would hate to see something happen to it, you know?
You see, your moderator bribes… they’ve fallen, shall we say, a little past due? Now, I’m not going to break your thumbs yet, and since you’re such a good and loyal moderator supporter, I won’t even close your thread just now. I will, however, have to put you on the “Timeouts and Slowdowns” secret list.
Now, I’m sure you want your board access to be uninterrupted. Hey, we all do. But I know for a fact that Giraffe has got thirteen kids to feed, and TubaDiva’s broken both her legs and our insurance will only pay for a little wagon for her to push herself around in. So, we wouldn’t want to have to have another chat, right?
It seems that most often when the mods are being whined about, it’s because someone wants to call people names or expects that they shouldn’t have to follow the board rules.
Granted, there are times when the complaint is valid but they seem vastly outweighed by the type I mentioned above.
I’ve often felt the same way…folks bitchin’ about Mods, but me never having a bad run in with one. Then again, I’ve often been in similar positions online and am a tad bit sensitive to the kind of crap they do have to put up with and I don’t want to be one of “those people.”
