I think you’ll find that the more you emphasize the less it means. And there are more . . . adult ways of emphasizing text.

And if you did so you’d get laughed at.

IT? It’s vB code. You can learn it in the link above where you write posts. I admire your misplaced “I will not be discriminated against due to my ignorance,” though.

Ooh, gettin’ smart and ageist on us now. All for your delight:

I am an English major. I am a junior in college.

I have been a copyeditor in the past, and am a journalist and copyeditor currently.

No college English professor has ever found fault with corrections I’ve made to any student’s paper. I ask the professors beforehand if they mind and I ask if they see anything in my corrections to which they object. They haven’t found any fault, though one did object to me outright editing students’ papers because he felt it was detrimental to development of their writing skills.

And you do need the advice of a teenager on how to use English.

A list of dopers who are (or were very recently) teenagers is available at your request. Might surprise you to know who’s been ex utero for less than 20 years.

God, I’m such a softie. All it takes is one apology and I just want to let bygones be bygones.

Here, I made cookies. hands xan some warm chocolate chip cookies

Let’s stop piling on now, Dopers, shall me? We’ve made our points. And yeah, I’d be happy to see this one closed. I’m sure the next threads we see xan in will be good ones.

[sub]you still owe me one slight ass-kissing. We can wait until you know me better.[/sub]

If you like the thread closed a bit more expediantly, you can email one of the moderators of this forum and request they close it.

That’s nice. Just try to keep in mind we are not Guinnea Pigs to experiment on for your amusement.

Whacky’s fine. Just try to keep things in the right forum. GQ is for question which have an answer. IMHO is for polls, and hypothetical questions which may not have one definitive answer. MPSIMS is, well, mundane and pointless stuff and a lot of the whackier things are done there. Serious discussions can occur anywhere, but serious debates go in GD. The Pit, as you’ve found, is where the dark, nasty things lurk.

Hope to see you around in a more friendly environment some other time.

Yes, you could. You chose not to. Simple as that:)

Yeah . . . boy, it’s so hard typing out [ b ] [ [ / b] (without the spaces, of course). I almost got a hernia, I tell ya.

Capitals annoy and convey an air of “I’m immature and stupid!” Bold, italics, and underlining do not. IMO, of course.

Any emphasis, if overused, is going to wear on your readers. Save it for when it’s necessary or when it serves to further your point.

But not with Coventry. Here’s a ticket:)

xanakis,

Shut the face hole. Comprende? You have bitten off much much more than any of us could ever chew, or would ever choose to undertake, rather.

I am sure your points appear valid from where you stand(or should I say hang…heh) but allow me to relate this to the age old game of chess; It is a stalemate, two kings left standing, yet you seem to be totally unaware that the game will never end. You are the die-hard player that has chosen to play the game out far, far too long, expecting to see defeat from your opponent. Face the fact, it will never come, it just an inherent part of the game. Walk away or start a new game.

Dude, he did apologize. He said:

He’s calling a truce. Can we just let this go now?

xanakis, if you haven’t already e-mailed a mod and requested this thread closed, I suggest you do so to avoid further pile-ons.

Jester has already mentioned this, but I will spell it out:

Posting in all caps has a tradition, dating back to ascii-text-only bulletin boards, of meaning I AM SHOUTING!

Despite all the new gizmos that are available to modify the style, mode, size, and color of posted text, the tradition has carried forward. On any message board, newsgroup, or bulletin board to which you might post on the internet, the response to typing in all caps will be a dismissal of your message on the grounds that you are trying to “shout down” the opposition rather than discussing the issue.

You may or may not feel that this is fair. That is your problem. I will repeat: on any internet message-exchanging medium, posting in all caps will be considered the height of rudeness and you will be disdained and mocked while your message is ignored.

If you really cannot be bothered to learn vB code, then you had better get in the practice of using the older ascii-text conventions of setting off important text with underscores or asterisks. Typing with the shift-lock key down will earn you only scorn.

Just one more thing: just to clarify, not to criticize. It wasn’t just the title being one thing and the subject being something else. General Questions is for just that: questions. From what I saw of your OP posted here, there was no question to be asked. It was in the wrong forum. A possibly beter idea might have been to go to IMHO and ask if threads with the word “porn” in the title get more hits than other threads.

Hell, that may have even worked in GQ as there is a definite answer to that question. Had you put it in IMHO though, people would have possibly been more open to discuss the topic (with the answer being a resounding “YES” I would think), than misleading people into opening a thread to find out we’re the rhesus monkeys in some personal experiment for your own gratification.

Happy 4000 Crunchy.

Xanakis,
The mods will probably be coming along to close the thread in a few, but before they do, I just wanted to say, good job. It’s easy to come on here and overreact to stuff and start insulting people, but it takes a lot of courage to realize when you’ve stepped over the line and then apologize. Welcome to the boards.

Cool. Peace. Welcome and all that jazz:)

BTW: some people who took a few bad steps when they first came here had their names changed. You might want to do this just for some sense of closure.

Your choice. Just a suggestion. Email Tubadiva (tubadiva@aol.com) if you want to do that.

Hear, hear.

I have to say, this was quite the dogpile, even if a lot of it was tongue-in-cheek. I found it amusing, but I don’t think I would have handled it as well had I been wearing the “nomex skivvies”. I think you’ve shown some grit here, xanakis and it’s good that we haven’t run you off. Now, back to the assimilation.

Resistance is futile…

Xan, thank you for being big enough to admit that you were wrong to post as you did. Please understand that the Dopers reacted as they did because “experiments” like your porn thread have been going on fairly regularly since the inception of the boards and we know the results. It’s been done, and we’re tired of it.

Despite this misstep, I hope you can go on to become a valued member of our community. However, it might help to keep one thing in mind. You said:

Emphasis mine.

You registered here. You post here. They’re not “your” board rules. If you want to be a part of this community, start thinking of them as “our” board rules. If you can drop the “us against The Man” mentality and start thinking of abiding by the rules as “us working with The Man to make things run smoother,” your time here will be a lot more fun and productive.

Welcome. Make yourself at home, but keep your feet off of the coffee table.

And, of course, that should be “run more smoothly” for maximum readability. God forbid this American should run afoul of the English Usage Police.

Actually, he didn’t really apologize; unless, of course, you accept the ARG220 method (i.e., flat out lies) to be an apology.

Upon closer inspection of the post in question, with bolding & snipping added by Monty,

Now, let’s take the bolded portions one at a time:

[ul][li]Probably wrong/yet to see any evidence - This after two pages worth of evidence that he/she/it/whatever was wrong and the same two pages worth of advice on how to get right.[/li][li]If it will please - Pleasure’s got nothing to do with it. What does, however, is the fact that xan’s aware of what he’s doing but has yet to learn the rules are the rules.[/li][li]Breached the rules - An admission that xan’s aware of the rules but, given the previous bit, is disingenuous in his pseudo-apology.[/li][li]Whacky - An admission that he’s not really here to ask questions, but to be wacky. {Apparently, “whacky” is the same as “disingenuous” in xan’s book.}[/li][li]May have been drunk - Yeah, right. That must’ve been one heck of a long bender. That excuse might have worked for the original thread which got closed, but doesn’t cut it for your actions in this thread.[/li][li]We all make mistakes - True, but you don’t seem to learn from yours. Sad, very sad.[/li][li]Your stalini… - Assholic assertion that the rules (and by implication, the moderators tasked at enforcing those rules without pay) are Stalinist.[/ul][/li]
I do belive I asked you to get back to us AFTER you quit contradicting yourself.

Your apology contradicted itself; therefore, it’s not an apology.

OK I’m gonna close this puppy.

Go forth and be a good poster, xan.
