Modern day Dead Kennedys

Yeah, but picking Jello’s own music sort of defeats the purpose of the OP. Gay for Johnny Depp were a couple (literally 2) years after I stopped paying attention, but they always struck my as a less fun version of The Dwarves. I like the Dwarves, but if they aren’t fun it doesn’t work. I’ll give GfJD another shot.

Just reading thread and news in background saying that one of the jailed members of Pussy Riotmoved to solitary when she began her hunger strike.

None of the suggested latter-day-DK bands above that I’m familiar with seems convincing.

Its more than some sort of sullen brat-teenager attitude or even political lyrics. It was also very much about trying to effect change in society / politics consistent with the stance in the songs, so behaviour driven towards social change through a complete package. In that sense Dead Kennedys closer to 1960s new folk troublemakers than a lot of their ‘punk’ imitators.

And as its confronting and challenging to the system it means taking real personal risks of arrest, violent reaction or jail - so Pussy Riot gets my vote.

Good call.

Edit : For whatever reason, I never checked out their music until now. It’s not good. Poorly mixed, too. But they are about as punk as fuck.

‘Not good’ is being generous, Yorikke.

I’m sure Simon Cowell would be far less kind, but its precisely because of people like him that we need people like them.

I saw a cartoon many years ago which featured a woman saying, “All punk rockers are poseurs, except for GG Allin who rules, of course.”

Don’t Google him on a work computer - trust me on this.

In the summer of 1993, I worked with a man who said he saw him, and our co-workers didn’t believe the stories he told about Allin’s onstage stunts: "He shits onstage - " “You are lying!” " - he sticks his microphone up his butt - " “YOU ARE MAKING THIS UP!” He got another job, and the day after he quit, I read in Rolling Stone that Allin, who always promised to commit suicide onstage, had died. I would have loved to have been the person to tell him about it.

When asked why he went to an event like that, he said, “I just wanted to find out if the guy was for real.”

Hahahahaha, yeah, I was being very nice because I support them in spirit. It’s really bad, isn’t it?

“Underwritten by McDonald’s
You got funded, while I got fat
On a training program for Type II Diabetes…”

-“Failed Olympic Bid” by the Future of the Left

I think they’re the closest to DK going now that I can come up with. Not American though.

Speaking of Future of the Left, Mclusky (Andy Falkous’ former band) is also very good.
