modern day worship of greek gods

You missed the memo. It’s ribs at Hooters these days.

A novel about the Gods’ lives these days:

Movie version (no release date yet; locale changed from London to New York):

The book was fun, although I thought that the story-line fell apart in the last third.

Also:

I would like to put in a few words on behalf of Hestia.

As goddess of the hearth, she was the protectress of the family and household, the basic unit of society. According to Hesiod, she was offered the first sacrifice at every festival, reflecting the importance of her office.

Her Roman college of priestesses, the Vestal Virgins, was powerful and respected.

That she didn’t feature in a lot of lurid myths doesn’t mean that she was unworthy of her Olympian Twelve status.

I am Hellenic. If you would like to talk to me, you can email me at dawnalierose@gmail.com. it is nice to see someone who believes in the same

I see this thread learned the lesson of Demeter, and didn’t eat any persimmon seeds.

You’re not much of a follower if you aren’t even able to spell Víðarr’s name. It’s an eth, not an “o”, pronounced “th” like in “that”. Use a “d” if you don’t have a fancy keyboard.

If you change your keyboard config to “United States - International” in Windows, it’s on Alt Gr+d. You may have time to change it before he comes to stomp his holy shoe on your lower jaw and yank the rest of you off it.

How do you do “Alt Gr + d”? What is “Gr” anyway?

Is there a numerical code, like Alt + 130 = é (e with an acute accent?)

(And even that is a little tricky: Hold down the Alt key, hit 1, 3, and 0 on the 10-key keypad, then release the Alt key. Not sufficiently intuitive!)

The right Alt key. It’s marked “Alt Gr” on my keyboard, but it’s probably not universal.

ETA: And the numerical codes are 240 (small) and 208 (capital).

Alt+0240 = ð

This works. Alt+240 gives something else, ≡ (like an equals sign with three lines) but Alt+0240 gives ð. This is nifty, as I didn’t know there were 4-digit Alt codes! Thanks!

Ask and ye gods shall provide.

Now I can’t stop thinking about pancakes…

Um…Demeter…Demeter, old gal, how’s’about a big stacka flapjacks? Thankee most kindly!

Now that would make a great bumper sticker. Jewthulhu?

Can I interest you in a franchise selling Cthulhu-hoops?

Better still CthuLOOPS!

“The sun is up and the stars are right. It’s a nutritious breakfast with the Old Ones! Why this crunchy goodness even turns the milk the Color Out Of Space!”

From Die Hard 3:

Willis: “You’re not Puerto Rican (or something like that)? I thought your name is Haysus?”
Jackson: “My name’s Zeus. People call me ‘Hey Zeus!’”

And you thought you went cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs!

I don’t get it…these multi-god theologies. To me, worship is fraught with danger-you offer sacrifices to one god/goddess-but you are never sure if this will piss off the big guy (Zeus/Jupiter). Suppose you take a liking to Diana-but Zeus gets jealous of this…then you are REALLY in trouble! On the other hand, if you ignore the gods and goddesses, you also get in trouble. Either they set traps for you, or punish you for hubris. And what if you have the great misfortune to be born physically beautiful (like Adonis)? You cannot win!

Animism, Pantheism and Polytheism were the cultural norms for most, if not all, humans prior to the rise of Monotheism.
I recommend an anthropology textbook to help your ignorance. I am not being mean here. This was a working belief system for a long time.

Remember, we are essentially still the same kind of people as we were 10,000 years ago.
Beliefs change.
