modern day worship of greek gods

I remind you that he tried to rape Athena. Admittedly she kicked his ass without effort, but then, she’s Athena and would have done the same thing to Ares. Probably did at some point. Anyway, my point is that none of her siblings, uncles, or male cousins are to be trusted.

:: works action on shotgun ::

Those bitches had it coming. So did Ariadne. My cite is the fact that they were [del]persecuted[/del] chastised by Athena, who, by definition, was in the right.

I’m not sure what you’re saying here. I was telling the OP about the one modern day Greek God-based religion I’m aware of and doing what Discordians are supposed to do when they meet another Discordian, that’s all.

Are those the ones where they carefully pack up the post-rape-and-pillage environmentally-conscious picnic lunch and make sure all of the glassware is separated out into the proper bins?

Or would that be more of the tree-humpin… er, hugging variety? If that’s the case, then most assuredly Dionysus would work.

How can he stop something that springs fully formed from his head like that?

Poseidon is the only one of the lot I’ve actually had any business with.

Imposing dude.

I’m a follower of Vioarr, Norse god of shoemakers and revenge. If he caught some piss-ant goddess like Athena trying to pull some B.S. like rigging a beauty contest he’d plant his giant shoe in her divine ass.

The usual threats.

Let’s see, when Athena’s mother was eaten, did Athena avenge her? No.

After Vioarr’s father was eaten, Vioarr successfully avenged him using a giant shoe. Is there even a competition here?

In the first place, as the myths have it, Athena had not yet been born when her mother, Metis, was eaten. Zeus son of Kronos consumed Metis because he came to understand that any son she bore would be greater than his father, and he feared being deposed by his own son as he had deposed Kronos and Kronos had deposed Uranus.

In the second place, the above is only one version of the Goddess’s birth. In others she is Zeus’s sister, like Hera; I think specifically of Sanchuniethon, whose name I’m pretty sure I just misspelled. She is also sometimes called the daughter of Pallas. I’ll link later when I’m feeling less lazy.

The mother of all migraines. Or was that Hera?

No cite necessary, you are correct. About the mythology, not about who is better. My god is better than your god, my dad can beat up your dad, and I can ride my bike down the big hill faster than you can. I’ll bet all my star wars action figures on it.

Not personal experience, but friends of mine that were dedicants of Athena often found that they were desperately lonely. Athena was a virgin goddess… Militantly so. Not necessarily a bad thing, if that’s you’re cup of tea, but once my friend was ready for a relationship, she had to spiritually break up with Athena in order to open the door in her life to actual physical relationships.

I am a dedicated Priestess of Aphrodite, but I consider myself eclectic Wiccan. It took me several years before I answered Aphrodite’s call, and a lot of soul searching, and realizing that “sacred prostitute” was not the only role that her priestesses fulfilled. I’m in a very solid, very monogamous relationship. If you’re choosing to have a relationship with a deity, make sure it is one that is mutually beneficial.

Two years ago, I was “called” to start serving Herne, a god not from the Greek pantheon. Keep your options open. You never know who is out there looking for you. I have not yet dedicated myself to Herne. Like with Aphrodite, I feel I need to know myself and Him better before I take the next step in that relationship. I’m slow in spiritual matters.

You’re welcome to worship me. No slaughters or bonfires required…I accept cash payments.

*Hedley Lamarr: Qualifications?
Applicant: Rape, murder, arson, and rape.
Hedley Lamarr: You said rape twice.
Applicant: I like rape. *
:stuck_out_tongue:

No slaughter, no rape, and no bonfires? What an utterfly forgettable god you are.

Worship me on the other hand, and I can promise you everything your heart desires. If I don’t have it, I’ll get it! And I don’t require anything except a few tributes here and there…nothing really… It’s a real steal!

We already have one. It’s called Mcdonald’s.

But didn’t Mithra get whupped by Godzilla?

(Reformated.) Everyone always seems to leave out Eileithyia, goddess of childbirth. Hesiod lists her as one of the core group of Olympians.

ETA: I would say that Dionysus and Hermes both could be considered “second rank,” as lesser children of Zeus.

Hmmph. If she ain’t in D’Aulaire’s Book of Greek Myths, she’s a johnny-come-lately as far as I’m concerned.

I’ve read that Dionysus was “born” a god rather than just another hero because Zeus was forced by a vow to reveal his true form to Dionysus’ mother. This killed her. Seeing she was pregnant, Zeus cut his thigh open. He put the fetus in the wound and sewed it up. A few months later, the god of wine sprang out.
