That’s my problem. I’m not as concerned about the amount of PDA as I am demonstrable attraction to one another; they’re always bickering like a married couple but you don’t really feel there’s a heart to the relationship. Cam’s a drama queen and Mitch is a snarky bitch, they have few common interests and neither is particularly attractive, so what drew them/keeps them together?

Seriously. I watched the wedding episodes thinking they should be breaking up, they so don’t make sense together, so why are they getting married?! If Clare were gay and the same controlling high-strung woman, with a stereotypically laid-back girlfriend, they wouldn’t be making out very much either.

And I try not to think too hard about Jay and Gloria or it strikes me as a rich old man buying a sexy woman like a prostitute.

That one’s ambiguous, as Mitchell was bothered by his own wimpy reaction. A better example was when Mitchell and Cam, on their way to Luke’s birthday party, stopped at a gas station, and Mitchell pissed off some large fellow at the pump, who threatened to beat him up. Cam, in full clown regalia, immediately got out of the car and made it clear that if any beatdown was going to be delivered, it would be by him and the other fellow would be receiving it. Mitchell was visibly impressed and even boasted about it to Claire later. “My boyfriend’s a badass!”

That is one of my favorite scenes from the show. Hilarious! Cam in that clown suit always makes me giggle…

Glee should be the perfect example, I would think. Lots of gay characters of both genders. My blind, uninformed guess is that the lesbian characters probably kiss a whole lot more than the male characters, supporting Skald’s assumption. Is that the case?

In glee, Kurt and Blaine definitely lip locked quite a bit. I don’t know if it was more than the lesbians (Santana & Britney, Santana and the NY waitress), but it was close if anything. So glee has that going for it (and this point in the run, only that).

No, I don’t think so. I just checked YouTube and there are (of course) videos where fans have edited together all the kissing scenes and it looks like the main gay couple (Kurt and Blaine) and lesbian/bi couple (Santana and Brittany) are pretty even in terms of on-screen kisses, with the guys being if anything slightly ahead.

From watching the videos just now, the two girls were a lot more likely to share a quick kiss in public, something that the boys almost never did. (In one episode they looked like they wanted to share a make-up kiss on the steps at school, but held back.) However, when the girls kissed it was often of no particular importance to the story, while when the boys kissed it was usually linked to some significant event or at least a conversation about their relationship.

I have trouble believing Sarah Hyland is old enough to play 19 year old Haley, when in fact she’s 23; she looks 14. (Totally off topic, but she just got a restraining order against her boyfriend- abusing such a tiny doll-like person makes the crime seem worse.)

This assumption hasn’t been established. Could you list these lesbian couples on network tv that kiss on-screen? Last one I remember was Willow and Tara back in 2001. Of course, I don’t watch nearly as much network TV as I used to, so I just may not be aware of them.

There have been lesbian couples on Grey’s Anatomy and The Goodwife.

ABC’s soap features a lot of gay male PDAs. Of course soap couples have more PDAs than primetime couples, but I don’t think network homophobia has anything to do the way Cam and Mitch’s relationship is handled.
