The other two FPS threads currently active aren’t sticking to my favorite obsession nearly enough. So I thought I’d open a separate thread for it.
So what is your favorite set up (load-out, perks, killsteaks)? Your K:D ratio? Which platform do you use? What game mode do you prefer? What do you think of the expansion packs? Do you use a headset? Got any good anti-booster stories? Have you prestiged? Has your girlfriend dumped you yet? Do you actually hate the game and want to explain to everybody why it sucks?
I’ll post some thoughts of my own once I get the OP up.
I have six load-outs and use all of them depending on the map and on what the other team seems to be doing. But my favorite thing to do is snipe. Here’s my basic sniper load-out:
WA2000 / thermal
PP2000 / extended mags
Claymore
Stun grenades
Sleight of hand pro
Cold-blooded pro
Steady aim pro
Predator :: Harrier :: Pave low
Without stopping power, I go for headshots, and am usually pretty successful. About a third of my kills on the WA2000 are headshots.
My preferred game mode is Mercenary Team Deathmatch. I like TD because I pride myself on my K:D ratio, and I like Mercenary because that allows you to avoid lobbies where the other team is six semi-professional gamers who beat you 7500 to 1300 while calling you a homosexual.
On a more personal note, I’ve heard a lot of talk about how this game does not deserve its popularity. As obsessed with it as I am, I have to admit that I am not qualified to speak to this point. My last platform before my PS3 was a Sega Genesis, so I’ve been out of the gaming world for some time. I don’t know what makes a game “good” or “bad.” I know only when I like a game and am fairly good at it. This is the first FPS I’ve ever played seriously, so I suppose there’s a chance that if I ever tried a “good” one, I would be blown away. Can anyone state succinctly why this is supposedly a “bad” or “broken” game?
Primary - P90 with rapid fire. (If I switch from a submachine gun the running speed hit seems too much to take, so I end up switching back)
Secondary - stinger.
Perk 1 - Marathon Pro.
Perk 2 - Lightweight Pro.
Perk 3 - Ninja Pro.
Deathstreak - martyrdom.
Equipment - claymore.
Nades - stun grenades.
Killstreaks - care package, turret, chopper gunner.
ETA: If I do use an assault rifle - I like the ACR.
Favourite game mode
Third Person Cage*
(in its absence I tend to prefer FFA, but flit between that, TDM, MTDM, and HCTDM) Expansion packs
I like most of the maps in the expansion packs. I particularly like vacant because when you’re inside you can get easy knife kills. I also like trailer park because I seem to do consistently well on it.
I haven’t got many good booster stories. Whenever I’ve encountered boosters it’s been purely by accident. I encountered some recently and was able to knife three of them before they knew what was happening.
ETA: I loved cage because of the completely different dynamic to the game. With only one other person nobody was trying to be a mouthy dickhead. It was generally good-natured and good humoured (a knife ‘dance’ would often cause both parties to ‘lol’ afterwards). And I was damn good at it!
At the moment my goal is to get my overall KD above 1. Currently I’ve got 396 more deaths than kills (about 11 thousand deaths and nearly 11 thousand kills)
So it can be very frustrating to be in a game where the odds are stacked against you and before you realize you’re in one of those games your KD for that game is terrible (KD gets recorded even if you exit a game prematurely, unlike XP)
Ah, a run-and-gun class. Although I’d think that the P90 would be unmanageable at medium- or long-range with rapid fire on it. Have you ever tried the UMP (or UMP-silenced)? It’s kind of cliché, but it is a ridiculously overpowered gun for that type of setup.
I consider any K:D over 1.00 to be good. That means that you’re a boon to your team (in TD-type games) instead of a detriment. A lot of people don’t seem to realize that every death gives the other team a point. Occasionally you’ll hear in a post-game lobby “Dude! Twenty-two kills! I fucking owned you fags!” but the guy will have gone 22-30, thus actually hurting his team. I’m at 1.24 right now (approx. 16k kills & 13k deaths), but I’m expecting that to drop a bit since I just got the new map pack, and don’t know the maps that well. But as long as I stay over 1.00, I don’t mind. Like I said, everything over that is just gravy.
As far as the newest expansion pack goes, I like four out of five of the maps, but can’t stand Fuel because 1) it’s so freaking big, I never know where I am and 2) that god damn rock glitch absolutely infuriates me.
I think I was over 1 when cage match existed (I was almost unbeatable). Now it’s something like 0.999 (10,700 aprox kills to 11,100 aprox deaths) but getting closer to 1 all the time because my per-match KD is nearly always over 1.
If you use submachine guns in the game and don’t use the UMP, you’re only hurting yourself.
I’m a huge detractor of the game. It’s a massive pile of shit, and Infinity Ward screwed the pooch greatly in virtually every single way with this game.
I don’t give a shit about how they id or didn’t screw up with their PC version, because it doesn’t concern me at all, so keep that in mind with this Festivus-like airing of the grievances.
There was no public beta. They had a smallish internal beta. This is relevant because the game was so glitch-laden at release. A large public beta, like Infinity Ward did with Modern Warfare 1, would have smoothed out some glitches, possibly given Infinity Ward time to beef up their netcode to make the game run better online. Immediately after release, Infinity Ward went on vacation for a month, except there were some glaring balance issues (the akimbo 1887 shotguns had huge range, for example) that needed to be fixed and there were some griefing douches (the Javelin problem) out there as well. A few programmers came in, on their month off, to try and fix some of it, but it wasn’t until almost December that it got fixed. The problem is, that patch broke something else. Then that patch opened up something else. Now, it’s the JTAG modders that are being a pain in the ass.
The guns. There’s no variation with them. You have the FAMAS, M4, and SCAR at the outset of the game. After that, you unlock another one of those guns with a slightly different skin. After that, you get another. Then you get the FAL, another gun with the same skin, and then the F2000. To recap, you have the FAMAS/M16, the M4/ACR, the SCAR/AK, the FAL, and the F2000. The choice of weaponry cuts down to an actual 5 guns (well, 4, because the F2000 sucks ass). Sniping is all but phased out of the game, unless you use the M21 with Stopping Power and the ACOG scope and pretty much use it as an assault rifle. If you’re sniping, you’ve got to have quick reflexes, listen to your team, and move when they move, because if you get hung out to dry, you’re gone. The fix? Actually have guns with glaring pros and cons. Have more realistic stats for them, especially with regards to damage (to be addressed at length in the next paragraph). Snipers are also partially obsolete because assault rifles are SO accurate at range.
The perks. I liked when Modern Warfare 1 instituted the perk system. Kinda nifty, I thought, but it had some problems. Not a big deal, they’ll just smooth them out for their next offering. Nuh uh. Granted, some things were fixed for the better, but it’s one step forward for Infinity Ward with a quick two steps back. The Pro versions of the perks just increases the amount of imbalance. The fix? Well, Juggernaut is long gone, but dump the Pro versions of the perks. Get rid of Stopping Power. Stopping Power should be completely gun-dependent (Treyarch gets this right wth the upcoming Black Ops-Stopping Power is gone). I’d like to see a different kind of perk-balancing, honestly. Have your three classes of perks (red, blue, and yellow), but assign a total of 11 points (or something) to distribute amongst perks. Red is worth 5, blue is worth 4, and yellow is worth 3. Again, have distinctive pros and cons with the perks. For example, Scavenger starts you off with a couple of extra magazines and you can only run over similar weapons on the ground for more ammo. Each weapon you walk over nets you less and less ammo, however. Also, you can’t replenish your grenades/equipment doing this.
Stuff in general: crappy matchmaking, bad lobby system, and no persistent stats. Any and all improvements that Treyarch made to the game from Modern Warfare 1 to World At War were flushed because Infinity Ward treated Treyarch like a little brother parasite. Now Treyarch is bringing back a lobby system (presumably) stats (presumably) and also instituting a Halo 3-like Theater system where you can save films and edit clips of your games and take snapshots. Let it be known, I don’t like their matchmaking at all. It sometimes makes NO sense who you get in a room with for a game. I remember the very first game I hopped into, there was someone that was a 40th rank in the lobby with me. What is a 40 rank doing with a lobby full of 1 rank people? I also don’t like how your rank increases no matter what you do. If you’re only a 15 out of a possible 50, then that’s it. That’s your level (obviously, don’t tie gun unlocks to this). Rank should at least attempt to be a skill indicator. Lastly, the lobby system is horrible. You scrounge together a lobby of people for a game, but it keeps kicking someone out of the game. The leader can’t back the party out, instead, everyone has to leave the pregame lobby individually to go back and be paired up with the person that was dropped. This dance continues for 20 minutes some times until you get into your first game, and then it’s smooth sailing, but even then, if the party leader leaves the game, then it kills the party, so you have to reform it and start the dance all over again.
I sold my copy of the game back in January. This game is just plain bad.
I’ve got 9 classes (7th prestige – you start with 5 and get one more on the 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9th prestige), so I’ve got a lot.
I keep 4 set up for Core (that is, decreased bullet damage, full HUD) and 4 set up for Hardcore, with one that serves double Duty as AntiAir. There is some overlap.
Core Assault Rifle
Core Rushing
Core Sniper
Danger Close noob tube w/One Man Army
Anti Air
Hardcore Sniper
Hardcore LMG
Hardcore Assault Rifle
Hardcore Rushing
Now, these classes usually get tweaked before each game, for instance on Highrise my 9th class always gets a tac insertion and lightweight, so I can get on the roof (as seen in this video – didn’t listen to it, may contain unsavory language, no idea) and drop a tac insertion, then spawn as my Sniper (M21 EBR/WA2000 with a silencer, cold blooded, ninja, one man army and a tac insertion for Hardcore, Intervention FMJ Stopping power One man army for Core, or Danger Close).
I’ll get 10+ kills before they realize where I am usually, especially if I have a good team to spawn trap them in the red building.
And, as I master guns, alter the class through each prestige, the classes will often get blurred. For instance, the ACR is a wimp, so I’ll use it in Hardcore, but with Stopping power (and it’s still worse than the SCAR tbh) – but I’lll set that as a Core Class, not a Hardcore Class, because it has stopping power, which is typically a core thing.
1.22, it’s been as low as .78 (after my first prestige) and as high as 1.82 (after my 2nd prestige, I did nothing my 2nd prestige but try to raise my KDR).
The 360.
Doesn’t matter, really. Each one just requires a different team-tactic.
They’re pretty alright. I try to skip vacant and Underpass whenever they come up, as my two least favorite maps, so I don’t think it’s an expansion thing, I just think it’s a one shit map thing.
Turtle Beach X11’s. They’re great for soundwhoring (basically, having the TV volume up, so you can hear footsteps, creaks, etc), but I bought them beforeI realized that. I got 'em because I kept breaking the cheap ass Microsoft ones, and these are built much sturdier, for not much more.
Not really.
More times than I should have, at this point I pretty much have to get to 10/70.
What girlfriend?
I hate the game. Fucking despise it.
I’m going to go use the restroom, then play it some.
I don’t use the P90 a lot anymore, but when I used to I would get long range shots by tapping the trigger.
But the UMP advice is the exact same I’d give, that or trying FMJ instead of Rapid Fire, that way the damage goes up, and while the ROF goes down your accuracy goes up and your ammo lasts longer.
That’s not always true. If you kill yourself (via explosion, jumping off a cliff, etc) it doesn’t give the other team a point. In fact, that’s a joke a friend of mine used to do, he’d run around dying (or team killing, in HCTDM) and our team would almost always have WAY more deaths than the other team, but we’d win by like 1500+ points.
Anything, even a PP2000 with FMJ will kill someone out of the rock. I recommend the RPD, you should always have an LMG with FMJ on one of your classes, never know when it’ll come in handy.
I’ve gotten 15+ kills in a row, without killstreaks, just by spraying a guy with a tac insertion, he’d respawn, I’d kill him, etc. I got like 5 kills this way, then 5 on another guy, then another 5 while they were trying to kill me to keep me from killing them in their rock.
Bleh, KDR is a silly measurement. I’ve got a 1.22 KDR, and know what it gets me? Naught.
Actually, XP does get recorded, you just don’t get your match bonus. I think you still get your Prestige/Challenge bonuses (In fact, I’m 99.99% sure of it).
Okay, don’t take this personally, but… ewwwwwwwwwwwww.
We’re redesigning this class for core, hardcore and 3rd person.
Core:
P90 FMJ with a Shotgun (rangers akimbo, M1014 or Striker – SPAS12 if you’re feeling accurate)
Marathon, Stopping power, Commando/Ninja (Commando if you knife and have decent ping, Ninja if you don’t)
Deathstreak - Martyrdom is fine.
Nades – Whatever.
Equipment – Semtex or Frag (frags are semi-magnetic, so in through a window and they roll towards people, semtex stick).
Hardcore:
P90 Silenced / Thumper
Marathon, Lightweight or Cold Blooded (I’d use Cold Blooded on HC), Ninja (Commando is Core only)
Deathstreak – No Martyrdom! I use Painkiller.
Nades – Whatever.
Equipment – Semtex (frags sometimes “roll back” at you or teammates)
3rd Person.
P90 ACOG / RPG or Thumper
Marathon, Stopping Power, Steady Aim (makes the recticle in 3rd Person smaller – as does the ACOG IIRC).
Nades – Whatever.
Equipment – Semtex/frag
And your kill streaks are WACKY.
Try using 5-7-9 or 5-7-11. Predator (gets you 1-2 kills), Harrier (gets you 3-9 kills) Pavelow/Chopper Gunner. If you’re going to do Hard Core, substitute the Harrier with an Attack Chopper.
Those three classes will let you use a P90 far more effectively, if you want to do a p90.
Personally, if you want to raise my KDR, I’d use the following class in Free For All or Core.
Honestly, it’s easy to go positive in some game types, like Hardcore Headquarters. Ignore the objective and camp the entire map in some obscure spot and you’ll have to try to go negative.
Both of those are also great for FMJ kills. Generally, though, I’m not a fan of them because they’re very corner-campy. I don’t like that.
Hah, me and my the guys I play with are like that on occasion, and I promise none of us are semiprofessional, and none of us will call you fags – at least not if they intend to keep playing with the group.
It’s just something to aim for. I’m third prestige so every other ‘achievement’ is meaningless as I’ve already achieved it before.
ETA: I got my numbers a bit wrong. I’m at home now so I can check. I’ve got 14638 kills to 15025 deaths so that’s 387 more deaths than kills or 0.974 K/D ratio.
In the early days I knew my KD wasn’t going to be super high because I was to impatient to do anything other than run about looking for kills. I knew it meant being exposed to the chance of death and I accepted that. I expect most people with super high K/Ds have become adept at picking people off from one place and holding that place down. I could be wrong. If not it’s the play style I don’t have the patience to adopt. I like to be out there.
I spend most of my time doing Objective Barebones Pro because I like some structure for strategy but I don’t play with a clan. Camping punks taking turns reigning down Chopper Gunners on me almost made me stop playing until I discovered Barebones.
My favorite setup:
FAMAS - Holographic Sight This weapon is vicious short range or mid range. It’s incredibly flexible, allows great mobility and has a good clip. Benelli M1014 - Grip The 4 shot clip is lame coming off of the Striker but after I got use to it 4 shots is enough. It’s shoots faster than the SPAS-12 and I really just use it to hold down room objectives. With Barebones theres no need for missile launchers. Semtex - I was an early fan of the Claymores but found they never got enough kills and often didn’t seal off the doorways I used them for anyway. 'Sides, getting shot while setting them up became routine. Smoke Grenade - Got sick of blinding myself and and am getting increasing sick of getting blinding by my allies. I find the stun grenades aren’t effective because the guy in the room is often already looking at the doorway you’re about to walk though and doesn’t need to move to shoot you as you enter. Marathon - I like mobility. Stopping Power - Lethal with the FAMAS, I use to go with Lightweight for the increased speed in aiming after sprinting but found I usually know when I’m about to see an enemy and stop running anyway. Commando - Never found the other perks of much use and got tired of getting shanked. I still need work on my reflexes though.
I would say this setup is most useful on: Favela, Highrise, Invasion, Karachi, Scrapyard and Skidrow.
I have a dilema.
I am trying to get to a 1 K/D ratio. But my brother is visiting for a week. he’ll almost certainly want to play COD MW2. He’ll almost certainly die a lot more than he kills. And he will have no choice but to use my account.
So? How much could he possibly play over the weekend? The amount you play is probably greater than the amount he could play, so it shouldn’t cause too much of a blip.
Are you on the Xbox? You could just create another Gamertag and take advantage of the free 1-month subscription you get for a new Gamertag and let him use that. If not, well, how much damage could he do?
I’m on the PC. It was just something random I wanted to share.
I guess I’ll let him loose on it Who knows, he might have improved since last time (It’s not a reflection on his skill at computer games, more on his inexperience playing this one)
On another note…
Recording games
I’m eager to get some of my games recorded. For x-boxers it seems easy, just record it as if you were recording a TV show, then transfer it to PC (or Mac) and youtube it.
But I’ve been trying to figure out how to record the PC version without using recording software (such as fraps, gamecam). This may sound like an excuse but using those pieces of software to record causes a drop in frame rate and a lag between control and movement (worse than the lag between movement and result you often get when on bad hosts), and these things have an adverse effect on how well you play.
Despite this I’ve managed to record a total of two games that I considered worth putting up on youtube…
and
Anyway, I once heard that the game has a built-in ability to record the entire game (the part of the game I assume is being used to show killcams) but I also heard that ‘hacking’ the game to make use of this could put your account at risk of being banned from steam.
But, and now I get to the reason for bringing this up, it seems quite obvious judging by the recent state of the PC game that hacking/hackers are not penalized at all. They seem to be getting away with it.
So, If I were to find out how to ‘hack’ the game so that I could use its in-built recording ability to extract the action from a game, turn it into a video, would this be a viable solution? Does anyone know more about this? Is there still a risk that doing this could put my account with steam at risk?
You might already know this, but your post isn’t clear: FMJ does not increase damage, despite what the build-a-class bar graphs say. The only thing FMJ does is preserve more damage when firing through surfaces. When not using bullet penetration, FMJ has no effect on damage. This website is a pretty good resource for weapon stats, and has semi-respectable articles on everything else in the game. Here’s the FMJ article.
Lobsang - one interesting aspect of the P90 is that when you put extended mags on it, your sprint time is extended. No idea if this is a glitch, or if it’s intentional. But you might try extended mags and a different tier 1 perk to see if it fits you.
I agree with Todderbob that your killstreaks could use a little love. For two reasons:
If you are going to have a chopper gunner as your last killstreak, you need two lesser killstreaks that will help you build to it. The kills from a care package don’t count towards a killstreak, and you can’t count on the turret for more than 2 kills or so. So that leaves you with about a seven killstreak, and four kills short of your chopper gunner. I’d recommend heeding Todderbob’s advice on this count. (Care to divulge how many chopper gunner kills you have since first prestige?)
You are clearly a run-and-gun type of guy. Those first two killstreaks make you stop and wait in a semi-exposed position for your crate. I would think you would want something that you can call quickly in while hiding (predator, harrier, etc.) or something you can call in on the run (attack heli, UAV, pave low, etc.).
