Modern Warfare 2

It’s not too bad IMO. Most people don’t bother talking at all. There’s a lot less than there was on Halo 3 at the height of it’s power.

I’m really enjoying the Online game. Haven’t had too much hassle finding games and when the host craps out the migration seems to work fine.

I don’t think so, that would give far too much of an advantage to one team. Once you have a chopper gunner in the air, you already have a significant advantage (unless it’s a map like Skid Row where 75% of the time people are indoors) so if they stayed around, it would allow an insane beatdown where the other team just wouldn’t have the chance to fight back.

Even though it is pretty easy to shoot them down, I think they’re fine the way they are.

I take it you’ve not had the experience of having the chopper gunner or AC130 killing you as you spawn then, only to be killed again and again until it leaves? If the whole team gets killed, then no one can shoot it down!

I love the online play, but I have a question.

How do you get to control the Harrier or command missile strikes?

Kill streaks. You can unlock all the kill streaks but at any given time, you can only select 3 for usage. For instance, right now, I have:

Care Package - 4 kill streak - drops package that can randomly give you one of several weapons including the Harrier, Chopper Gunner, AC-130, etc.

Predator Missile - 5 kill streak - controllable missile

Emergency Airdrop - 8 kill streak - basically an airplane that drops four care packages

These kill streaks can go up to 25 kills, which is the tactical nuke. No matter what is happening in the round, if a tactical nuke goes off, game over. The person who dropped it (or their team) wins and everyone in the room dies.

Fuego.

Incidentally, you also get a Challenge Complete and a bunch of XP the first time you get nuked. Evidently dying in a nuclear blast is a real character-building experience.

A 25 kill streak is auto-win? Does the game no longer have regenerative health? Such streaks weren’t exactly rare in CoD4.

I enjoy the multi-player now that I can actually get into games. However, hacks are too common and there is a degree of unbalanced weapons that kills a lot of enjoyment for me.

Time for the Airing of Grievances for this game:

There’s no party system. Really. It’s bullshit. Say you hop on and want to invite your friends. You can’t go into your friends list and look and see who’s in your friends’ parties. So you guess and try to get 6 into your party to run a normal gametype. Instead, you get 7. You can’t close the room or limit the amount of people that can come into the room. Not only that, but if you, or someone in your group, has a shitty connection and get into the pregame lobby, they might not make it. They can just drop out. That means you have to go back and get them. You can send them an invite to get into the game, but it won’t guarantee that they’ll even be on your team. So you, as the party leader have to go back. The problem with that? If you go back one screen too far, that fractures the entire party, so it has to reform. Not only that, but each player that was in your party that DID make it to the pregame lobby has to also hit B and get back to the party lobby.

So yeah, the improvements that Treyarch made (rudimentary lobby system, party control, etc.) didn’t make it into Modern Warfare 2.

Next time, you smug bastards, release a public beta so all the stupid little exploits that have already gone through, and the patch that broke other things, doesn’t happen again. Even better, please. Just buy the party system from Bungie. They had a better lobby system than you did 4 years and a console ago. Whatever amount of money they want, pat them. It’s worth it. I’ll deal with the shitty netcode and the problems that would have been fixed with a public beta if we at least have a good lobby to work with.

It’s an auto-win if the person with the 25-kill streak has the nuke enabled. The fastest way to the nuke is the Harrier (7 kills, 6 with Hardline), Chopper Gunner (11 kills, 10 with Hardline), then Nuke (25 kills, 24 with Hardline). Of course, Hardline if you need the extra boost.

If you run the Chopper Gunner and don’t get shot down, you’ll easily rack up a dozen kills.

Personally, I run the Harrier, Pavelow (9 kills, 8 with Hardline), and Chopper Gunner. I don’t care about the nuke. I want to destroy the other team as quickly and as efficiently as possible, and don’t want to plan around an event that doesn’t always happen. That way, the Harrier comes up, can realistically nab a couple before it gets shot down, call up the Pavelow and realistically get a couple more before someone shoots it down, and then get the chopper gunner and have at it.

Indeed, it’s all about the Chopper Gunner. AC130 is more attractive at first glance, but the reload times lose you a lot of kills.

Once I realised that Care Packages are mostly fun because they’re a gamble, but don’t add to your kill streak, I changed to a new set of streaks: Predator, Attack Heli, Chopper Gunner. Once you get to the Predator, it’s a cinch to get 2 kills with it, call in the heli, and hide in a building until either you get the Chopper or your heli gets shot down.

I especially like playing Sabotage, saving up a Predator, waiting for the (inevitable) draw and sudden death, and then immediately taking out half the enemy team.

Issues: difficult to party with people, people with dual 1887’s (really? an overpowered shotgun in each hand?), and most especially: PC users constantly finding fault with it. Since I only ever intended to get it for the Xbox360, considered only as a console game it’s incredibly good, but every time I read a thread or a discussion anywhere on the internet it’s 80% PC users complaining about it.

As had been said either earlier in this thread or in another MW2 thread, console users are used to that crappy PvP system. PC users generally get a better system, like the ones used for CS:S and Modern Warfare. Lack of dedicated servers is the main complaint.

Funny thing is that the system works for any other game I’ve played over Live. It’s pretty obvious that Infinity Ward screwed multiple pooches this time. It’s a fun game, when you can get a game in.

Really, these things would have probably been avoided had they released a public beta.

I was definitely surprised that some of the improvements didn’t carry over. It seemed like Treyarch took what IW did in Modern Warfare and incorporated it into World at War but it then didn’t carry over to Modern Warfare 2. Disappointing, as WaW had some good improvements on the Multiplayer system.

Overall, though, to say that I’m disappointed in MW2 as a whole would be disingenuous. I play it all the time and I love it when I’m playing.

Interestingly enough, though, I used to be a pretty dedicated player of the SOCOM series for the PS2 (it’s carried over to the PS3, as well) and that always had a dedicated server set-up ala PC gaming. I can say with certainty that this is the way to go. It’s frustrating not being able to decide what maps you want to play and when. It’s even more frustrating when you leave a game because it’s not fun, search for another and then are automatically placed back in the game you just left. Playing SOCOM, I would tend toward certain servers and it was fun just running into the same players time and again allowing me to get to know them and their playing styles. Added extra dimensions to the teamwork aspects of the game.

No, I’m aware, I’ve been playing CoD on PC since #1. But since it was obviously optimised for console playing, I bought it for xbox instead of PC. If I didn’t have an Xbox, I wouldn’t buy it for PC. It’s that simple. It’s a great console game, but it’s not good by PC standards - why not just treat it like a bad PC game and ignore it? Why constantly complain about not being the target platform?

Dude. Friends lists.

Disabling party chat has ruined the multiplayer for me. Or rather, it’s limited me to one or two modes. I like to get into a party with anywhere from 1-7 friends and just chat amongst ourselves. Now, we can’t do that. Terrible decisions by Infinity Ward.

It’s funny to say this given the sentiment when World at War was coming out, but this game would have been much better had Treyarch made it instead.

This doesn’t make sense. It’s still better on the PC, it just doesn’t live up to the standard of what a PC game should be. But if you’re going to play it, you’d get a better experience on the PC, so why wouldn’t you take it? The game pisses people off because it’s been dragged down almost to the level of a console game, but it’s not inferior to the console versions.

As to why not ignore it… why should we? The COD series made its name on the PC. It wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without having PC sales, or having staff that came from the talented people of the PC modding community. Besides that, it would’ve taken them LESS effort to put out a higher quality product - they claim to have spent a lot of time implementing IW.net, whereas they could’ve just updated their dedi server from COD4 pretty easily. They actually spent extra effort crippling what could’ve otherwise been a good game.

Even if it wasn’t “optimized” for the PC, it’s still submitted to the PC market as a product and it’s still going to sell hundreds of thousands of copies - why shouldn’t people complain about a substandard product? A product that the developers spent extra effort making worse, no less.

And the other reason is that the louder the complaints, the less likely we are to get screwed in this fashion. If the biggest budget/biggest launched/biggest hyped game ever gets criticized in unison, it will make others think twice rather than follow suit. The Spore boycotts/amazon downranking/etc stuff made EA drop invasive DRM from their games, and already this backlash against IW has made some other developers seize the opportunity and publically gloat about how their games will have proper multiplayer and how they aren’t screwing the PC community, etc.

This game was something I was looking forward to for months, and now it’s something that isn’t worth me buying. I don’t see how that isn’t something worthy of comment. Something I could’ve loved was thrown down the drain for no reason - and extra effort was put in to do it. It’s also the biggest attempt by a big release game to try to implement “features” that have been proven over and over again to be inferior, and it should be met with the greatest of resistance, lest it set some sort of precedent.

It’s a shitty deal. They could’ve easily released one of the best games of all time, but instead released crippled garbage that isn’t worth much of anything. It’s wrong in every way you can look at it. I don’t see why, if you were looking forward to the game for a long time and were lied to (they said up until about a month before release that they’d be doing a proper PC version with all the features of COD4), this is a pretty massive dissapointment.
