Modest Proposal to Let DACA People Stay

How about the following trade; we don’t allow ANY deportations, but in exchange allow any undocumented worker a waiver of union requirements and the Davis-Bacon Act on Federal jobs? Bye bye union jobs at $75 or more per hour plus benefits.Or fixing hurricane damage.

I feel this kind of proposal would put the Democrats (in the nature of full disclosure I am an extremely liberal Democrat) on the spot big time. They would have to choose between their buddies in the union or importing more knee-jerk Democratic voters. There’s lots of work needed to fix hurricane damage now in at least Texas, Louisiana, Florida and maybe Georgia.

You are adorable. Don’t ever change.

So the undocumented get to stay and get to have a competitive advantage over legal immigrants or citizens in offering their labor for federal jobs?

Uh, no. Not going to happen.

I doubt many union jobs are paying $75/hr, but if they are, let’s pay undocumented workers at the same rate. Seems only fair.

That kind of pay came up in an article about **Tappan Zee litigation**relating to “the wage difference between carpenters and dock builders” where “(c)arpenters are paid $70.11 per hour, compared with dock builders that make $92.47 per hour” no consideration is given to a “workfare” program where benefits recipients would apprentice and be paid, say, $22 an hour to learn a trade and $40-$45 per our when working at these trades. The cost numbers of $20 billion to build these tunnels and related train station improvements is eye-popping and ultimately unfeasible. No matter how badly needed nothing is going to get built at those figures.

Your proposal makes literally no sense. Why would it be good for anyone?

In the nature of full disclosure, I am the Pope. And your proposal still makes no sense.

What if we kept those, but eliminated the insane corporate golden parachutes?

DACA is a specific legal residency program for immigrants who entered the US as minors and meet various qualifications, not just “any undocumented worker” as the OP seems to think.

Here’s a better proposal that solves the main complaint I’ve seen from conservatives.

We let the Dreamers continue to dream but at least one of the parents (because this is clearly the only way these children are brought to the US) must give up a hand as punishment. I would suggest their life but I’m a compassionate guy.

…And once they’ve mopped up after the hurricanes, we could put them to work building that beautiful wall. Of course, to make sure they don’t slack or just walk back south across the border, we’ll keep their families as hostages.

No, I want some of them to clean up the mess in my backyard. There’s a lot of work needed to get it back in shape.

I am not sure what this is, but it is not a debate.

Given the utter lack of seriousness, (not to mention sense), I am moving it to The BBQ Pit.

How will you keep them from leaving your yard and illegally crossing to your neighbors? Invisible collar?

Sweet!

JBGUSA, you’re a fucking imbecile.

Now that this is in the pit, I can give this little gem the attention it deserves.

You conservatives believe in Jesus, right? What did Jesus say about lying? Did he say “It’s OK to lie as long as you do it to troll the liberals”? Or something else?

I’d know, but as an atheist I have no knowledge of this Jesus character or anything about him.

Fairly standard tactic from the libertarian capitalist right to destroy unions, welfare and the uppity working class.
‘Look at those poor suffering [others], why should they have less than you greedy natives when they are willing to have no safety regulations and work for a handful of rice a day ?’

So, the solution to exploitation of brown people is to exploit them to an even greater degree, by means of throwing out centuries worth of contract law?

No, no, no. It’s to exploit everyone by throwing out centuries worth of contract law. Fuck unions, amirite?

It’s especially funny when conservatives scold liberals for not caring enough about the (white) working class and the tragic disappearance of their decent working-class jobs, and chant Vote for Trump because he’ll bring the good jobs back and bring manufacturing back and…

…And then when they see a working-class person who actually has a decent working-class job, they practically shit themselves with fury at the rapacious unions blah blah blah, and rack their brains for ways to cut these blue-collar workers down to the level of precarious minimum-wage struggle where they belong.

I don’t need a $92.47/hour job. I’d be happy with the one at $70.11/hour. This sounds great! I had no idea unions were so awesome that this is what people are being paid nowadays.
