Mods editing their own posts

Why do mods use their editing powers to cover their own mistakes?

If you or I screw up a post, we have to either live with it or post a correction. Mods, it seems, have no compunctions covering their asses. Coldfire, for example, edited his post here.

I understand they need to be able to edit posts so they can remove verbotenlinken and whatnot. I understand we plebes can’t be trusted not to eat our words. I think of the mods as being the same as us except when they put their hats on, but when they use their special powers for mundane posts it puts them on a different level; I feel like they don’t respect me as an equal.

Mods, can you please use your powers for good, not for evil? Unless of course you don’t respect me as an equal, in which case, hey, fuck you too.

YEAH!!! And Coldfire turned me into a newt!

But… can manhattan swear when closing a thread?

Little do you all know that was really post in which Coldfire admitted for the ages that he truly is a Nazi. Alas, the bastard must’ve changed his mind and changed the admission to some drivel about something or other.

Yep, it’s all a conspiracy.

Damn, I sure wish I was a mod right now so I could cover my ass and edit my previous post to say “Little do you all know that was really the post in which Coldfire admitted for the ages that he truly is a Nazi.”

Yeah! Why isn’t Coldfire leaping tall buildings with a single bound? Why isn’t Lynn Bodoni faster than a locomotive? Why isn’t Manhattan thwarting the plans of evil overlords?

I demand a refund!

Rank hath its privileges…

We are equal in all of the really important ways, I think. But mods have a greater responsibility and therefore get a few perks.

Why worry about editing? Everyone makes mistakes.

OK, here ya go…

:sound of silence:

Sure, no problem.

stypticus: Mods are just guys and gals like you and me. If we allowed everyone to edit their own posts, then people would abuse the priviledge. Mods do not edit posts for content, unless specifically stated. They normally only edit for spelling mistakes / broken links etc. It’s not worth starting a pit thread over.

Euty: Stop bragging… otherwise I’ll come over there and take that Edit button right out of you hands!

If you are extra, extra nice, mods will edit posts for you. I ain’t gonna tell you what you have to do, though.

Wait until they start editing each others posts.

Get a grip. We abuse creditors, farm animals, soccer moms, badgers, common household chemicals, our eyes and livers so why get in a swivet about us abusing a few “powers”? So we get a mug and some nifty buttons to play with. If we had the kind of power we keep damn well want and deserve, do you really think Celine Dion would still be recording?

Well, I respected you, hell, loved ya like a brother until your thread pushed Coldy ahead in the Pit Thread race.

::shakes head mournfully::

Editing is nothing.

There is also the option of emailing a moderator with a pitiful plea to fix your post (best only used in dire circumstances, such as a messed up subject line in a new thread.)

Well, the rest of us have that option at least. You went and started this thread, so I suspect that your future emails might be… overlooked?

Dammit, now, TVeblen, I specifically pitted all the mods, I was only using Coldfire as an example. I’m trying to play fair, here, all I’m asking is that you do too. See, I can abuse creditors, farm animals, soccer moms, badgers, common household chemicals, your eyes and livers, and I do, believe me I do – every chance I get! But I abuse democratically, equal rights!

And the rest, in order:

Zanshin, you may be a newt, but you’re not my newt.

samarm, yes. Yes he can.

Monster104, we can all be Nazis. We can’t all edit our posts.

Duke, what samarm said.

Zoe, that’s exactly what I mean. We’re all equal in the “important ways”, so why rub our noses in it that we’re not equal in other ways? Are the mods more equal than the rest of us?

Eutychus, most kind. Glad we could come to an agreement.

samarm, sure they don’t. So why are their spelling mistakes more important than ours? If they made some huge gaff that would, for the rest of us, warrant a call to SDMB 911 for emergency editage, then by all means edit it, but at least leave a reason behind. “Wife beat me about the head for having the wrong opinion. Post edited for marital harmony.” Okay, I can respect that, at least it’s a good reason. Editing for editing’s sake makes me feel like everyone went silent when I walked in the room.

porcupine, thank you. I didn’t want to know, I’m sure.

skankweirdall, I’ve run out of comments but I didn’t want you to feel left out. See how nice I can be? See the good example I set?

On review:

Derleth, you’re late.

neuroman, I need pitiful lessons. Are they offered online or do I need to contact my local continuing-education office?

Not on review:

Now that I’ve made a huge deal (a swivet, if you will) out of a …whatever it was before, I’m going to go.

Oh, and TVeblen, if you need rescue you can put a secret message in a posting and edit it out later. Cecil will never know.

Wow, Derleth edited that post before he made it!

Editing is overrated.

You don’t edit it like that.

This is how a REAL MAN edits posts.
