I am having trouble with the operation of a table lamp (literally–the table and lamp are one unit, which we bought 45 years ago at a now-defunct furniture store). The problem is with the bulb socket, which is “mogul base”–its diameter is one-half inch greater than a standard socket.
There are few places these days selling mogul-base light bulbs, and the socket seems to have a short or something that shortens the life of the bulbs. What I would like to know is: Have mogul-base lamps become rare in recent years?
Home Depot and Lowe’s don’t seem to carry the mogul base socket, it seems; I would like to replace the mogul base socket altogether since replacing standard 3-way bulbs is no big deal…
Mogul base lamps have never been very popular for home use. They are still available for industrial applications, but you might want to just replace the socket with something more reasonable.
There are mogul base adapters. Here’s one : https://www.1000bulbs.com/product/5840/ELEC-242515.html?gclid=Cj0KEQiA4o3DBRCJsZqh8vWqt_8BEiQA2Fw0eViOR2N5RsbBCU1oh4TOKAv1-tzJCf9QwcP3iIq0Ie0aAnn28P8HAQ
You might just replace the socket with a new standard one.
