Molly Ivins, one of George W. Bush’s most vocal critics, has left us after a long battle with cancer. Bye Molly, we’re going to miss you!
If you have not read her books or columns you have missed wonderful writing. It is what all columns should be.
My wife is a former Texan and she first introduced me to Ms. Ivins as a columnist. She could skewer the pompus better than anyone. It is sad to lose both Buckwald and Ivins in such a short period of time. If there were a chart of the senses of humor of the U.S. someplace, it has recently taken a nose dive.
I met Molly Ivins several years ago when she gave a talk in Santa Fe. She inscribed two books for me (“Raise more hell!”), and I asked her if I could give her a hug so we’d both get something. She gave me a big ol’ hug. We have lost a giant. May her memory be a blessing.
Raise more hell!
I have been reading her for years. She could strip the bullshit away in a column like no one else. She was honest and couldnt be quieted. I will miss her and Hunter Thompson very much. They saw the big picture.
I’d start one in GD, but what’s to debate? This sux.
I don’t suppose anybody had her in the Death Pool?
Working for Change has all her columns back to 2001.
John Nichols pays tribute to Molly in The Nation.
Wow, tremendously sad news. RIP.
Molly was a national treasure. 50 years from now, people will still be reading her works, like they read H.L. Mencken today. Rest easy, Molly Ivins.
Just sticking my two cents in: last night when I heard the news, it was like I got punched in the gut. Molly was one of my favorites. I saw her speak in Berkeley a few years back, and I remember being a little annoyed with her that she was not condemning enough of G.W. Bush, criticizing his politics but giving him the benefit of the doubt as being a decent enough man. In retrospect, I think it really says something about Molly: no one knew better what W (or any of the Bushes, for that matter) is all about, what both his character and politics are like, yet she still afforded him a benefit of the doubt as to his personal decency. She could still be kind to someone who, politically, she found abhorrent. Not many bring that kind of perspective to the world of politics. She deserves all the applause she’s received. I’ll miss her.
Bush is finally off the hook but I’d hate to be in God’s shoes right now.
I suspect God’s one of her biggest fans.
