Mom-friendly Blu-ray player?

I’m looking for a Blu-ray player for less than $100 that’s suitable for someone who’s not at all tech-savvy. No 3D would be preferred, streaming capacity is expected to be unimportant, and above all, it needs to be easy. Not kid easy, but senior citizen easy.

I’m expecting that I will need to plug it in and join it to their WiFi, and the first time it says “update is available” I will be getting a panicked phone call. Similarly, I don’t want to set them up with something, and two days later, have them call because they pressed a wrong button and can’t figure get out of Hulu. That’s if they can see the buttons on the remote.

Any thoughts? Presently, the Sony BDP-S390 and Panasonic DMP-BDT220 are contenders, but I’d like to hear from any fans of LG, Samsung, etc.

I have a Samsung that I absolutely hate. It is has touch sense buttons that only respond when they want to, randomly freezes, won’t resume play if you stop or power down, etc. I returned the first one and the second one does the same thing. I should just toss the POS.
I got a Panasonic for our other set and it is excellent. I’d buy another one tomorrow. Runs flawlesly.

I’m a mom, and one of my kids recently sent me the Sony BDP-S390. I hooked it up to the TV, linked it to the WiFi, and made it talk to my Amazon Prime account without any problems.

My only “duh” moment was navigating the keypad, for entering passwords, etc. Once I saw that key entry was just like texting on a cell phone that doesn’t have a keypad, I was good to go.

It’s hooked to a non-HD TV. My son also sent an HDMI cable, for when I have an HDTV. I don’t know if connecting to an HDTV would be more difficult, but I don’t think so.

If you don’t think she’ll use it for streaming, maybe it would be easier for her to use if you don’t connect the WiFi. I connected the WiFi right away, and I don’t remember what was on the screen before it was connected. IOW, I don’t know if the screen look like a normal DVD screen, with no extra buttons for her to see and get confused.

Good luck. You’re a good son.
