MOM! Phineas and Ferb are making a SDMB thread!

The Disney Channel/Disney XD series *Phineas and Ferb has been given its spotlight on this board before, but since it was brought up recently in another thread- and since I’ve really gotten into it more for some reason- I feel it deserves another highlight.

For those unfamiliar, the show works on a basic format, but the format is often twisted in just the right way to make it really funny when it needs to be. Twin brothers Phineas and Ferb are always trying to come up with a new idea each day of their summer vacation- and it usually turns out to be an incredible one. Their pet platypus, Perry, is, well, a platypus. He doesn’t do much. Or does he? It turns out he’s actually a secret agent who defeats the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz, probably the world’s most pathetic (and funniest) villain in history. This defeat usually leads to the boys’ project mysteriously disappearing, much to the disappointment of their older sister Candace, who is always trying to catch them in the act.

Aren’t I a little old to be watching this? Yes, yes I am. But the humor is in such a vein that, much like the best cartoons, it can be enjoyed both by adults and children. And the songs! Each episode has an original song, and they’re usually pretty good. One of the creators happened to like writing songs for some of his previous projects (Rocko’s Modern Life “Zanzibar!” musical/recycling episode featuring “The Spelling Song,” SpongeBob’s “Campfire Song Song”), and the original songs from this show are up there with those. Here are a few of my favorites:

Gitchee Gitchee Goo (apparently the 21st century equivalent of “Eep Opp Ork Ah-Ah”)
I Ain’t Got No Rhythm (Emmy-nominated song)
Busted!
Squirrels In My Pants!
Queen of Mars
There is No Candy In Me (don’t ask)

And, since I can’t think of anything else, a brief tribute to the best minor character, Norm the Robot:

“The enemy of the platypus is man!”
“I could sure use an oily beverage!”
“Let’s invite our wives next time!”
“Secretly, I’m very lonely!”
“What’cha DO-in’?”
“How about next time you do the cooking and I’ll come up with the schemes that ultimately fail?”

Phineas and Ferb are not twins. They are Step-Brothers. They aren’t even biologically related.

I have the excuse of watching it with my daughter who adores this show. It’s one of her favorites.

My favorite song from this show is “Ride from Outer Space”.

Curse you, Perry the Platypus! I knew that. Why I typed “twins” I have no idea. They may not be twins, but they will always be Candace’s little brothers…because they’re younger, they’re related, and they’re boys.

My favourite character is Vanessa, Doofenshmirtz’s sarcastic daughter who will also often sing the song for that episode (by the by, did you know the girl that voices her and sings for her is none other than that little girl who sang “All I Want for Christmas” from the movie Love, Actually? Look up “I’m Me” and “Not So Bad a Dad” on Youtube…

I’m a really big fan-- some of my favourite episodes are the manic ones where a lot of ideas are thrown out in rapid succession – the episode with the chariot-race/minotaur race (called "Greece Lightnin’, I think) and the one in the mall (“Van-necessary Roughness” – with Vanessa singing!)

I have a funny story related to this show:

I am a behavior therapist who works with autistic children. One day a student and I were coloring at the table. He drew a long horizontal rectangle. “What’s that you’re drawing?” I said. He considered the rectangle a moment and then said, “A platypus.” My face looked like this:  but I didn’t want to be down on his drawing skills and I praised the effort.

Later he was watching T.V. as a reward and he chose “Phineas and Ferb,” which I had never seen before. Lo and behold, it featured this long, rectangular playtpus.

Pyper Awesome.

I am going to so bust them for this.

Some other random stuff that amuses me:

“We just got a memo about Doofenshmirtz, and guess how they abbreviated his name- Doof! The Doof! It’s days like this that make you glad you have a cool name like Monogram.”
“And Carl!”
“I told you. Your name’s not cool.”

“And the turkey goes…and the turkey goes…”
“Sir, we lost Agent T last November.”
“Remind me again why all our agents are animals?”

PERRY THE PLATYPUS! (falls out of tube)”
“Oh, sorry, Agent P.”
HERMAN THE HEDGEHOG! (falls out of tube)”

“Yes, yelling at a post proves to me you’re not insane. Why don’t you come with me to the dairy aisle and you can yell at some cheese?”

A blind man: “What did you just say?”
“Aglet.”
A blind man: “I CAN HEAR!”

“The Chronicles of Meap,” featuring the late Don LaFontaine as narrator and Lorenzo Lamas as Meap, fighting his nemesis Mitch, who was presumably only named that to set up a dumb-yet-funny Aliens joke. “You get away from her, you…Mitch!”

“FOSSILS! Dun-dun-dun! rewinds tape
FOSSILS! Dun-dun-dun! rewinds tape
FOSSILS! Dun-dun-dun rewinds tape

“A banjo-playing platypus? gasp PERRY the banjo-playing platypus!”

“To add insult to injury, the platypus is leading.”

“I’ve just insulted the macaroni and cheese recipe of a whale! What part of that is not evil?”

“What kind of a plan is that? Let’s go over to a stranger’s house and, in song form, refuse to leave until he hands over a dish no one’s prepared since the 16th century!”

“Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated!”
“Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated…after hours…”
“Doofenshmirtz Evil is carpeted!”
“Doofenshmirtz Abandoned Vacuum Cleaner Factory!”
“Doofenshmirtz Abandoned Self-Storage!”
“Doofenshmirtz’s ex-wife’s house in the hills somewhere!”
“Doofenshmirtz holding a bucket!”

Hey I didn’t know that. That is funny because in “Love Actually” she (Olivia Olson) was the love interest of the boy (Thomas Sangster) who plays the voice of Ferb…

Her singing that “All I Want for Christmas” song was amazing.

Oh this is the favorite show in our house! I’m a big Ferb lover (with Vanessa a close second), my husband cracks up laughing just seeing Doof on screen, and my 4 year old loves Phineas best. Even my 18 year old has “Gitchee Gitchee Goo” as her ring tone!

“There you are Perry!”

Heh, I love this show as well- the Time Traveling episode was my personal fav. one. So glad I feel the need to randomly watch children’s TV shows just to see what’s out there- this was a gem of a find!

Also, the soundtrack isn’t half bad as a gift for the lil’ ones, but now I find myself wanting to own more and more of their songs from other episodes.

Phineas and Ferb are so productive, they’ve actually traveled through time twice- of the two, my favorite is “Phineas and Ferb’s Quantum Boogaloo,” which does to the first episode of the series what Back to the Future 2 did to Back to the Future 1.
And more randomness:

“Speaking of wishes, you know what I never understood? Genies! They tell you to wish for anything you want, and then they add some terrible twist. Like you wish to jump high so he turns you into a frog. What? Why? Who gains from this? The genie? Where’s the benefit? You should be fighting genies, man, not me. I’m not the problem. Genies. Genies are the problem.”

“As they say in Mexico, dos vidonya! Down there, that’s two vidonyas.”

“Aren’t you a little young to know about all these cop shows?”
(as David Caruso)“Yes. Yes we…[puts on sunglasses] are.”
(in the style of “Won’t Get Fooled Again”) “YEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated!”

“My name is Doof and you’ll do what I say WHOOP WHOOP! My name is Doof and you’ll do what I say WHOOP WHOOP!”
“Perry, this is no time for decorating…oh, wait.”
“NO! Not the number-one most requested Phineas and Ferb song! (New extended version, never-before-seen!)”

I know I’m thinking too hard about it, but how old were Linda & Lawrence when they met? When was the Love Handel concert? If it was before the kids, how/why did they break up, separate to have their kids, and then reconnect later? “Dude We’re Getting the Band Back Together” is one of my favorite episodes, but it bothers me every time. Phineas & Ferb look pretty young in the “Little Brothers” song, when Ferb comes to live with them. I guess it’s meant to be like Brady Bunch – don’t even consider the step-sibling angle!

According to the Phineas and Ferb Wiki (yes, everything has a Wiki out there), co-creator (and voice of Dr. Doofenshmirtz) Dan Povenmire once left the following comment on a YouTube video:

In 1985, before they met, Linda had a brief stint of fame as Lindana, of the hit single I’m Lindana and I Want To Have Fun! (Of course, Phineas and Ferb are as unaware of this as they are that their platypus is really a secret agent.) In the episode “What Do It Do?,” there is a flashback to sometime before this, as a then-single Doofenshmirtz goes out on a date with Linda and the two inspire each other: Doofenshmirtz inspires Linda to be a pop star, and Linda tells Doofenshmirtz to start out small and attempt to conquer the tri-state area instead of the world.

my 18 year old has “Gitchee Gitchee Goo” as her ring tone!

Where can I get that for my ringtone? I am serious, I want it.

McGeek she said that she just googled Free Ring Tones and searched for the song until she found it. She can’t remember where she got it. I have some students who have the theme song, but I like GGG better!

And I want the Perry growl as my message alert.

Seriously, I love this shot to pieces and would love to know if/when a DVD release is available. Someone care to clue me in?

There are two DVD releases, standard Disney kiddie-release fare, but with a good selection of episodes. In fact, I gave them as a Christmas gift to someone I was telling about the series in order to introduce it to them.

“The Fast and the Phineas” contains:
“One Good Scare Ought To Do It” (Phineas and Ferb build a haunted house)
“The Fast and the Phineas” (The boys build a race car)
“Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror” (The boys build a beach)
“Are You My Mummy” (The boys hunt for a mummy in an old theater)
“Flop Starz” (The boys become one-hit wonders)
“Raging Bully” (Evander Holyfield trains Phineas to compete against a bully in a competition that would not be dangerous if imitated by the target audience)
“Lights, Candace, Action” (Candace stars in a movie directed by none other than Phineas and Ferb while Perry interrupts Doofenshmirtz’s…cheesemaking?)
“It’s About Time” (Phineas and Ferb repair a time machine and end up lost in prehistoric times, while Doofenshmirtz gets a new nemesis)
Original Pitch Reel (storyboard version of “Rollercoaster” with Dan Povenmire doing all the voices)

“The Daze of Summer” contains:
“Jerk de Soleil” (The boys make a circus while Candace has an allergic reaction to parsnips)
“Toy to the World” (The boys create a toy that does nothing- it’s no Brick)
“A Hard Day’s Knight” (Candace unwillingly plays the part of the Black Knight of Worcestershire in a jousting competition while Perry infiltrates an evil convention with the help of a Queen Elizabeth robot and Doofenshmirtz’s mentor’s introspecspecspecspecspecspec)
“I, Brobot” (The boys build robot helpers with minds of their own, '80s music is so 2002)
“It’s a Mud, Mud, Mud, Mud World” (Candace’s driving test has two things you normally wouldn’t expect in one: monster trucks and Billy Ray Cyrus)
“The Ballad of Badbeard” (The boys search for pirate treasure while Candace wonders why her nostrils whisper to her)
“Greece Lightning” (The boys stage a chariot race while Doofenshmirtz builds a robot man, the enemy of the platypuses…platypi…platypeople?)
“Leave the Busting to Us” (Candace hopes a reality TV show can help bust her brothers)
“Unfair Science Fair/Unfair Science Fair, Another Story” (The boys build a portal to Mars for a science fair, then actually use it, while Doofenshmirtz attempts to enter the science fair himself)

The entire series is also available for purchase on iTunes, if you so prefer.

I love this show. Fortunately, so does my three year old.
She’s taken to saying “oh, there you are Tarot” to our cat when she appears. It’s awesome.

“Yep, nothing says a mother’s love like a giant robotic platypus butt”

I started watching it because of my niece. Then my daughter started to like it because the big girl did.

Now I find myself watching it when neither of them are around.

To me, it’s the best kids’ cartoon since Rugrats.
