The Disney Channel/Disney XD series *Phineas and Ferb has been given its spotlight on this board before, but since it was brought up recently in another thread- and since I’ve really gotten into it more for some reason- I feel it deserves another highlight.
For those unfamiliar, the show works on a basic format, but the format is often twisted in just the right way to make it really funny when it needs to be. Twin brothers Phineas and Ferb are always trying to come up with a new idea each day of their summer vacation- and it usually turns out to be an incredible one. Their pet platypus, Perry, is, well, a platypus. He doesn’t do much. Or does he? It turns out he’s actually a secret agent who defeats the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz, probably the world’s most pathetic (and funniest) villain in history. This defeat usually leads to the boys’ project mysteriously disappearing, much to the disappointment of their older sister Candace, who is always trying to catch them in the act.
Aren’t I a little old to be watching this? Yes, yes I am. But the humor is in such a vein that, much like the best cartoons, it can be enjoyed both by adults and children. And the songs! Each episode has an original song, and they’re usually pretty good. One of the creators happened to like writing songs for some of his previous projects (Rocko’s Modern Life “Zanzibar!” musical/recycling episode featuring “The Spelling Song,” SpongeBob’s “Campfire Song Song”), and the original songs from this show are up there with those. Here are a few of my favorites:
Gitchee Gitchee Goo (apparently the 21st century equivalent of “Eep Opp Ork Ah-Ah”)
I Ain’t Got No Rhythm (Emmy-nominated song)
Busted!
Squirrels In My Pants!
Queen of Mars
There is No Candy In Me (don’t ask)
And, since I can’t think of anything else, a brief tribute to the best minor character, Norm the Robot:
“The enemy of the platypus is man!”
“I could sure use an oily beverage!”
“Let’s invite our wives next time!”
“Secretly, I’m very lonely!”
“What’cha DO-in’?”
“How about next time you do the cooking and I’ll come up with the schemes that ultimately fail?”
