Monty Python and The Holy Grail
The “Knights of the Round Table” musical number, where they suddenly cut to a man hung in the dungeon by manacles, who goes ding-dink with his metal cup at the perfect moment in the music.
I enjoyed the humor of the movie, but for some reason, I laughed so hard at this that I had to leave the room. My friends looked at each other, scratching their heads.
Raising Arizona
While the doctor is showing the young couple a diagram of the female reproductive organs, and helpfully pointing out things with his finger, Nick Cage’s character explains “…her body was a rocky precipice upon which my seed could find no purchase…”
Laughed at that one. Again with the stares.
My favorite thing for that is the Young MC music video stuck in the middle with the boys dancing around the pool with the ladies. Its so unexpected yet funny- it cracks me up each time I see it. Definitely a movie that does not take itself seriously.
A great scene, not “entertaining” per se, but very well observed and acted, is in the opening of Deliverance, when Dueling Banjos is just starting up. A hillbilly appears and walks up to Ned Beatty and Jon Voight, saying (I think) “Who’s pickin’ a banjo here?” Except it’s really unintelligible, and it’s clear that Ned hasn’t understood what’s been said. So he doesn’t reply. There’s about 5 seconds of unspoken discomfort before the guy leaves. I just thought it was really well done, and horribly realistic.
Also “Mister, I love the way you wear that hat.” Hillbilly examines his hat, then puts it back on: “You don’t know nuthin’.”
The scene in The Silence of the Lambs where Hannibal Lecter is taken to meet Senator Martin. I also find the scenes in both Silence and Red Dragon with Lecter and Dr. Chilton entertaining.
The big gun fight in The Crow where Brandon Lee just kills everyone left (except two!). The whole scene is great but the soundtrack kicking in with My Life With The Thrill Kill Cult… oh mama, I can watch that carnage over and over!
