Why will no one inclined to defend the Bechtel and Halliburton contracts discuss their being awared noncompetitively? That is the issue, not their basic competence, and ignoring it fools nobody.

With Halliburton, at least, the contract was awarded long ago, for services unspecified. Now there’s some work for them to do, so the contract is becoming active. As much as you may want to find sinister overtones in everything the Bush administration does, there’s nothing to this Halliburton contract, outside of a potentially bad PR move. Then again, with the existing contract being what it is, it may be that the have to give the contract to Halliburton - I couldn’t say.

George Schulz is an old-school, Gerald Ford/Rockefeller Republican, not a neo-con by any strecth of the imagination.
