Monitors of the Gods

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

One day, they shall rule the earth.

In the meantime, I want one.

That’s cool. I don’t have anything like that, but I do have two matching LCDs:

Check it out.

(I also have a digital camera. )

If I had a monitor like that one, Zenster, I doubt I’d ever leave this house … awesome stuff.

I’d ask the price, but if ya gotta ask…
friedo, good to know other people’s desks are a cluttered mess too.

$8k for the little one
$17k for the big one

Thanks, I’ll stick with my 13".

Yes, I’m talking about monitors. Why?

They also make a pretty mean laptop.

This is the only thing I’ve seen that gives Apple’s 17" Titanium power book a run for its money.

I like these folks.

Holy totally freakin’ awesome. I must get one of these.

Woah

That thing cost more then my freakin car!

Okay, middle-aged, female, Luddite checking in – what the hell would you do with something like that? Why would you want a monitor that big?

There are 2 answers (at least):

  1. Because you run a world-class Ops Center, like maybe FAA central or something, and you need the biggest, brightest, easiest-to-see monitor so that everyone around the room can see exactly what is happening.
  2. Because you’re a techno-geek and you want to be able to say “Mine is the biggest!”

Did anyone else think this was going to be about lizards?

You have the only 17" laptop, Macintosh?

My ass.

Evercrack on that monitor would be SO friggin’ awesome.

Evercrack? Ha! Try Hegemonia! Aww yeah. 4 screens of interstellar combat.

Or Zsnes!

Finally, better than a TV screen!

[shades eyes and squints out into left field]

Where in He|| did that one come from?!?

ooooohhhh…I waant!!!

One word: Porn.

Seriously, though, I can think of a lot of reasons, besides those that have been mentioned. If you’ve got multiple documents/programs you need open all the same time. I think CAD folks and people editing video would find such a monitor handy.

I’ll take 7 of 'em (one for every room in the house including the bathrooms), who’s paying for 'em?

For the record, the smallest size (45") is $1499.99 MSRP, not $8K

As to why one would want one: there are times when you want to monitor more open windows than will legibly fit on a standard monitor, and overlapping or buried windows are a pain. I went with a dual head video card and multiple monitors years ago, and though it doesn’t look as elegant, I’ll stick with it. I like the configurability

I have 3 PCs under my desk, and though I rarely use them all a the same time, it’s convenient to dual or triple head one (creating a combined virtual destop is easy in most operating systems these days) or switch one to dedicated use by one computer. Add the good KVM (keyboard - video - mouse) switch I got cheap on eBay, and all I really lose is the cool muti-LCD stand profile [Besides, I barely have to turn on the heat in this room - a real plus in New England)

Extra screen real estate is especially good when you are operating a computer remotely, while working on your local system. Even a non computer professional like me (who only uses a remote system about once a week) can enjoy watching HDTV or archived video from my Home Theater PC downstairs via the house LAN.

I gotta get me some of that… The laptop, I think!
