Monk: Where was the traffic jam?

The episode Mr. Monk Gets Stuck in Traffic, the whole backlog is supposed to take place on the 101. Does anyone know where the location was filmed/supposed to take place? Monk said that they were going to end up spending four hours in the car (for a two hour soccer match), which I assume would mean a two-hour drive each way. If they went north, that would mean that the game was in Ukiah and the crash a bit south of there. This is further supported by Korn showing up, although it seems a bit early in their kar… er, career to be playing Konocti. The background does look similar to the general area…

Where would two hours south from San Francisco put them? Gilroy? And if the soccer even was in Ukiah, is there some special soccer event there that they would drive two hours to watch/particpate in?

Not sure, my husband didnt recognize it offhand, maybe it wasnt so much of a distance 2 hours as a traffic 2 hours?

And Korn FWIW has been in existance since before 1998, as the Family VAlues Tour [Korn, Ice Cube, Orgy, Limp Bizkit and Rammstein] took place then. How long they have been in existance before that tour I have no idea [I am not bothering to look them up because AFAIC, they suck donky cock and I have sod all for interest in their attempts at playing music.]

How long do you need to be around before playing that particular venue?

Most shows aren’t filmed in the locale in which they are set. I bet the episode was shot in Canada or something.

It looked to me like it was shot on a bit of abandoned freeway somewhere in southern California. The pavement looked pretty unkempt and the terrain and brush reminded me of locales near San Fernando Valley or the Grapevine.

Two hours south of San Francisco on 101 puts you in Salinas, or if you aren’t going at rush hour, perhaps a few 10’s of miles further south to around about King City. The section of 101 south of Salinas is very flat farmland. The section of 101 north of Salinas is hilly and forested, but not quite like the area where they filmed last week’s show.

Personally, the area depicted in the show looked to be the section of 101 between where it turns away from the San Barbara area coast to Santa Maria. (One of my personal pet peeves about the show is that they don’t use enough genuine Northern California locations, and this seemed par for the course for the show.) Although I only personally driven as far as Santa Rosa going north from San Francisco it didn’t seem “redwoody” enough to be Ukiah to me.

Normally, you have to be a 60s, 70s, or 80s band, or Hootie and the Blowfish. The joke around here (Santa Rosa) is that playing Konocti is a sure sign that you’re in the twilight of your career.

I’ve driven from Santa Rosa up Ukiah a few times and it wouldn’t surprise me if it was filmed… maybe about midway between the two locations. There are many a stretch that are more oaky than redwoody, and more hilly than oaky. However, I certainly don’t remember that much tar repair on the road and most of 101 north of Cloverdale is single-lane in each direction (although, the two lanes did merge into one during the car chase).

IMDB says that they’ve been filming in LA since season two, which is kind of disappointing.

FWIW, TVTome says that the sporting event in question wasn’t soccer at all:

IMO the scenery looked to be around the Grapevine section of northern L.A. County.

This is a non-sequitur, but I didn’t feel like starting a new thread just for this. Anybody notice how Monk mentioned that the air-conditioning was off in the wrecked car? I’m pretty sure original VW Bugs never had air-conditioning. They had a rear, air-cooled engine, not suitable for an a/c system, if I’m not mistaken.

There was 2 types of ac for bugs, one was an in the window swamp cooler deal, the other was a real ac unit that didnt depend on the car moving to work. My bug doesnt have either type, but mrAru has had experience with an ACd bug before…i could wake him up and ask him=)
