Mmmmm…DLI…what a wonderful year. Make sure you get out and appreciate the area you are in to the fullest, teppei. It’s a truly fantastic place.

DLI, not MIIS?

Monterey is cool, I work there.

DLI is beautiful- this whole week has been sunny and warm. On our sea side runs, we can smell the ocean and occasionally hear the sea lions bark. My teachers are exceptional (except for mumble giggle buddha, whom I’ll get into later).

As I’ve just been promoted to phase V(in which curfew is extended, I’m allowed to wear civies during off-duty hours, and I’m allowed to go off post), I can really start to enjoy Monterey this weekend; I couldn’t last weekend due to studying for the unit 1 test. I plan on visiting the underwater aquarium and hanging out on the beach; simply enjoying the opportunity that has been afforded to me, really.

Have to get back to class- the test starts in half an hour.

Oh teppei, you are going to have a good year! It’s been a LONG time for me, but I was at DLI from Sept74 to August75. So are you a 98G2LKP, like I was? Will they end up sending you to Camp Humphrey’s? All I can say about that is enjoy yourself while you can.

I grew up in Kansas, and at DLI had a barracks room on the GOOD side(I could look down the hill and see the Bay) Had my first good seafood at the local restaurants there. I wish the aquarium had been there then, it’s one of the things I’m sorry I missed. Keep us posted, will you? I’m getting all nostalgic here.

I’m glad you like it here (I live up the coast about 10 miles away in Marina). The beach here is indeed beautiful. We are coming up on our best weather this time of year. Fall and Spring are generally sunny. Wait til summer, it will get dreary and foggy ;).

Also, the Monterey Bay Aquarium isnt at all underwater. The outer bay tank just looks like it is. One of the docents said to a group i was with: “One guy asked how we held back all that water to get the glass window in”. That was met with much laugheter, especially since the tank is about 2 stories tall, and you go up a flight of stairs to see it. So, all of the tanks are on dry land. There is a sweet deck you can see the rest of the bay on (there’s also a large tide pool below. You can see just about all of the coastal towns from Monterey to Santa Cruz there.

Monterey is a great town if you dont mind most things closing around 11 (though bars do close around 2 am). Alvarado is a good place for going to bars though (Brittania Pub, and Lollapalooza seem full a lot on weekends). Also, you have to go to Fisherman’s wharf. There’s some good seafood restaurants there (so i hear, being a local, i tend to overlook it, since it’s generally crawling with tourists :)).

As for me, i’m a student at the CSU in old Ft. Ord.

Actually, its been foggy for several days now.

The fish jail is above the sea & don’t forget it costs like $17.00 to get in. I get in for free though cause I met a nice very young lady who works there
