Montrealers: Where to get poutine near the ballpark?

I’ll be at Exhibition Stadium in late June to take in the Expos. I have heard of this delicacy named poutine, and as a aficianado of junk food, I feel it my duty to eat some. Where should I go? Thanking you.

So you’re the one who attends the games? Did you lose a bet or something?

I can see I spelled “afficionado” very wrong.

And, JChance, the Expos have the wild card spot right now. I’m looking forward to checking them out.

Well, you can get poutine AT the stadium if you so desire. Any place that serves fries here serves poutine, pretty much, McDonalds and Burger King included.

If you want really really good poutine… well, I bet the stuff at the stadium is okay (as far as I remember, they have a hot dog and greasy food stand there, yes, I too have attended Expos games). Otherwise, La Belle Province is a good bet, and I think there’s one close by although I’ll have to let another Montreal Doper let you know exactly where.

Hey, I wasn’t protesting their record…just the attendance.

Through April: Avg turnout: 13,794. Better than I thought.

But never mind me. I’m from Washington…and therefore I lust after the Expos.

Heeere little franchise! Niiiice franchise.

You beat me to it.

So do you have to bring your own chair?

Twelve years ago, it was utter crap. Don’t know about now, though.

I’ll be your all-in-one French-speaking, poutine expert guide and taxi driver if you can tell me where Exhibition Stadium is in Montréal… :stuck_out_tongue:

Chain restaurant poutines are the worst, trust me.

Don’t go to Micky D’s, or BKing or any american chain for a Quebec-created food. Go to La Belle Province, LaFleurs, or some greasy spoon with a name like Chez Henri or something like that. Get it anywhere in the city.

But most importantly-- Exhibition Stadium? What the hell’s that? It’s the Big O(we), and the metro stop is Pie IX (pronounced Pee Neuf) IIRC. I’m sure matt_mcl could tell you for sure, and tell you exactly how long it’ll take to get there from every stop in the city, and where to stand so you have to do the least amount of walking

There’s a La Belle Province quite close to the Olympic Stadium… we went there after the Biodôme last year at Doperéal…

In any case, you’re in the east end. You can get good poutine just about anywhere.

When we were at the Expos/Red Sox game at Olympic Stadium year before last, I got poutine at the ballpark. It wasn’t bad (certainly no worse than ball park food in general), but as an American, I’m not sure I have a right to an opinion on this question.

I acquired a taste for poutine while traveling north of the border (on the ferry from St. John to Digby, actually), and maintain a fondness for it that is possibly related to my liking of the Royal Canadian Air Farce. (Roger Abbot as (or possibly on) Chretien: “The guy’s just a couple of French Fries short of a plate of poutine!”)

Thanks all for the replies.

As to Exhibition Stadium, hmm. I do know it’s Olympic Stadium, but I said I was going to Exhibition Stadium to a few of my buddies, and they all knew what I meant.

Was it ever referred to as the Big E or are we experiencing a mass hallucination?

Mmmm…poutine…

You’ll have to excuse me. I’m leaving for 3 days in Toronto on Thursday and I’m fantasizing about the poutine already.

My Canadian friends are so freakin’ lucky.

Ava

Trust me - Torontonians do NOT know what a good poutine is! It’ll do, avabeth, but I really recommend you swing on over to Québec to get yourself a taste of the real thing!

I want a poutine! Even though I’m still stuffed from dinner…I want one!!!

And, when I read “Exhibition Stadium” my first thought was “What? The Expos made money and they moved to a new stadium?” I’ve never heard of the Big E - it’s the Big O or the Stade Olympique to me. Even “Olympic Stadium” sounds wrong!

Exhibition Stadium was in Toronto. The Blue Jays played there before moving to SkyDome. Dopers aren’t generally interested in sports and junk food, I thought I’d made a buddy there for a minute…in a Labatt Blue Buddy (see commercials during the hockey games) sense anyhow…

Scott Evil is somewhat correct about poutine near La Grosse Toilette En Ciment, it’s not really in the east end, but east enough that anglos can credibly demand a “downtown” stadium without appearing to be racists. If you want decently authentic poutine and you won’t go off the island into the rest of Québec, you should head east of St. Laurent St. at the very least and avoid chain restaurants and the stadium itself.

There’s a place in Ste. Hyacinthe that just serves poutine and has something like 40 kinds, but you have to walk before you can run.
