Can anyone tell me if there has been archaeological research at the East Haddam, CT site of the Moodus Noises?

Could you elaborate a bit about the Moodus Noises? I know a little about the Kokomo, IN hum, but I’ve never heard of the Moodus Noises.

Within East Haddam, the Village of Moodus was the site of a dozen water-powered textile mills during the nineteenth century and the home to the eastern European immigrants who worked them. Later, people seeking refuge from city life flocked to summer resorts in Moodus, several of which continue in business to this day. Moodus is named for its famed “Moodus Noises,” strange audible rumblings that are seismic in origin and that figure prominently in Native American lore.

Today, the mysterious noises are more folklore than reality. Apparently located in an area of East Haddam which includes Cave Hill and Mount Tom, where the Salmon and Moodus Rivers come together, legend tells of loud and sometimes violent ground quakes. The early inhabitants of the area, the people of the Pequot, Mohegan and Narragansett tribes believed the rumblings were brought on by the god Hobomoko. They called the area Machimoodus meaning, “the place of bad noises.” Many other legends and tales have been passed along to describe the reoccurring noises including chemical explosions beneath the earth, the pressure from a giant pearl which blocked an underground cavern, and pearls in the mussels in the Salmon and Connecticut Rivers. Modern instruments and geophysical research have attributed the Moodus Noises to shallow “micro earthquakes.”

I’ve been there, but I’ve never heard the noises. Of course, I was only there for about 20 minutes…

Arcanius - I’m a native of CT and still live here (near Stonington). Moodus was named such for it’s siesmic activity. Yes…small earth quakes in CT.

Ahhh, Stonington. Poor thing I have made my journey around the state, starting in Danbury, traversing to Norwich (worked at Foxwoods for 3 of the most horrible weeks of my life), schlepped to Clinton, skidded to Waterbury, and landed safely (mostly) back in Danbury.
Hmmm I’m going to the NY Doper Dinner Friday, but maybe we have the makings of a CT Dopefest?

I agree. I tried once but it went no where. I’ve got the beach, the BBQ, the tiki torches, the lobsters and burgers all on the back burner till we can get a fest to come to fruition. Someday.
