Moon Mystery

Incidentally, CJOK, I don’t know if you’ve never noticed the distinction before in your copious readings, or maybe this is some foreign convention which I’ve never noticed before, but it’s a bit odd that you use the backquote ( ` ) for apostrophes. It’s far more conventional to use the single quote ( ’ ). Not that I particularly mind, I guess, but your habit’s a bit odd and strikes my curiosity.

Hey guys, these English comedy routines are really funny. Sort of a backyard Fawlty Towers

Please forgive me then, I thought i was talking to the general public then, not Americas literati.

I`m sorry but this was not slur on your integrity, i thought you were vouching for the board.

MODERATOR ADVICE

Around these parts, stranger, we don’t cotton to people who come into a thread(especially a GQ thread) and admit they were trying to “get a rise out of you.” This is sometimes called “trolling.”

That’s a very bad thing on this board. Not saying you were doing this in the classic sense, but don’t do it again.

Not a warning, just friendly official advice.

Im glad youve kept your sense of humour!

SORRY!!! I`ll try and be less fractious in future. Cheers for putting up with me!

Well, we’re not all Americans here. At any rate, don’t you see the foolish blind arrogance in making a statement like you did? It’s a bit like walking into a thread and announcing “You know, I bet I’m a good foot and a half taller than any of you posters here”, only insulting to boot, and with even less of a chance that you have any good a priori justification for your claims.

At any rate, it doesn’t matter. This thread’s in GQ right now, but there doesn’t seem to be any particular question you have in mind; at least, your true intent here seems less to merely get a question answered and more to start some sort of debate. So, given that I suspect this will wind up in GD anyway, why don’t you come out and tell us exactly what your position is on the moon landing, and we can go from there?

Do you really want to know?

p.s. Goodnight!

Well, I’ll tell you.
:: music begins playing, the townspeople begin dancing and singing, "He’s going to tell, he’s going to tell! ::

Well, it might be good for a laugh.

You are of course correct, and I have been warned about it before. I`ll learn event-
ually.

p.s. But I did manage to pull some good links out of you. Cheers again gang!

In regards to the OP, I wanted to add that, while NASA was learning to move manned missions from Low Earth Orbit to the Moon, the USSR was busy in LEO, becoming the world experts in long-term living in space, starting with Salyut 1 in 1971. (Later, Mir was a great success story; American comics made fun of it because they were ignorant.)

You might well argue that those efforts will pay off sooner than going to the Moon; yet I want with all my heart for us to go back. When I was eight and watched Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the Moon, I really thought that by the 21st Century, there’d be a fence around their landing site to keep the tourists from walking all over it.

Oh, there is a fence, all right… It’s 385,000 kilometers wide, and made of hard vacuum.

CJOK, since you’re so fond of books, might I make a recommendation? Bad Astronomy, by Phil Plait (he used to be a member here; you might see the name Bad Astronomer crop up a few times in those threads folks linked to). He addresses the moon landing hoax hypothesis and many other common space-related misconceptions, in much more thorough detail than you’ll find on a message board.

Hello again people, sorry if I annoyed a few heads yesterday. Some of my comments were a
bit inflammatory, I know. Anyway, looking at your board this morning and noting the stats, I
do feel slightly vindicated. My OP was the 2nd highest responded to on your pages, so I don`t
know what that says about your readers! Bye! CJ.

Thanks for the apology.

However I don’t understand your assumption that having a lot of views means anything about the quality of the thread or the gullibility of the SDMB.
‘Moon mystery’ suggests you are going to rehash a woo-woo theory, ignoring all the evidence.
Since this board is dedicated to fighting such ignorance, you would expect a lot of posters.
Note that we have given you a lot of scientific evidence and links, while you have only made a couple of spurious claims.

People love to slow down and watch car wrecks, it’s human nature.

I think it means that you’ve misinterpreted an educational forum to be your personal trampoline and that but for the good nature of readers here you’d be shown the door.
