Moonstruck - mints in bubbly?

I stumbled across the movie Moonstruck on Hulu, having not seen it in many years. And I ran across something I’d wondered the last time I saw it:

What are the little white lozenges that the actors pop into their bubbly? I assume this is an Italian thing, but I’ve never come across the practice, not being Italian and all. Is it sweets? Isn’t spumante already fairly sweet?

Sugar cubes. Add a dash of bitters and you’ve got a Champagne Cocktail. You would typically use a dry, inexpensive sparkling wine.

Not all spumantes are sweet. Some are dry.

They don’t look like sugar cubes, they look like Mentos. Maybe the Italians hadn’t discovered Diet Coke® yet.

Maybe Jordan Almonds then?

Every Italian wedding I’ve been to (and living in NJ, I’ve been to a lot) has had Jordan Almonds as a favor or on the tables or passed out during the reception.

But, I’ve never seemed them placed into a glass filled with wine.
