MoP-ing up after the Cataclysm: Updated WoW General Discussion 8/22/12

One solution is to target the mob, then stick a world marker on it. Makes it a bit easier to spot if you can just spin the camera until you see the blue square or green triangle or whatever you’ve picked.

The addon already puts a green triangle on the mob

I’ve clicked on the NPCScan window and I only get a miniature rotating avatar of the NPC, but nothing else. I will pay more attention to find the glowing blobs on maps, the green triangle in the distance, health bars, info, etc.

The circle in the minimap indicates where were you when you pinged the mob. There should be a colored blob which marks the area where the mob is found: match both to try and find it.

But it is possible for NPC_Scan to ping a mob that’s already dead. Corpses keep their mob’s Vnum.

I finally used openraid .org to get in on a sha of anger group yesterday. Anyone else use it? Still didn’t get a drop, but hopefully it’ll be easier to form a raid next week. I should make sure to get some tokens so I can reroll on gear there and in lfr. My dps is still pretty bad, I need to run more heroics for gear. I’m really avoiding rep-grinding. I’m only to revered for most of them on my main. Now to do it again, or get exalted first just makes me sad.

This weekend I was back home after months…

Ah, the pleasures of having a Decent Sized Table, a Decent Sized Monitor and a Chair That Fits Me!

I even got some organizing done outside of Azeroth!

I’ve been running at least one heroic a day, and dabbling in Raid Finder a bit. My DPS is all over the place. Some heroic runs I’m hitting about 50K, but in raids and some heroics, I drop off to about 32k-ish. Not sure I understand why. I’m mostly running frost spec, using the same rotation, just getting wildly different results.

Thinking of trying fire as my off-spec. I’ve been arcane forever, but read something about how arcane is really behind in terms of raid dps, and the few heroic runs I’ve done as arcane seem to bear that out.

What kind of dps numbers should I be shooting for, with ilvl 465ish gear?

I’ve been sticking with fire on my main, and am usually at the top of the charts. I think the randomness comes from the RNG of crits. If you get a lot of crits, (And thereby a bunch of Pyroblast!s) your dps goes up significantly.
I started Arcane, but pretty quickly went fire during this xpac, but I hear the same thing you are. arcane is lowest dps. On the other hand, I’ve been in a bunch of heroics and lfrs with a bunch of arcane mages. Maybe they know something we don’t.

Don’t underestimate the desire of players to just pick the spec they want to play and roll with it. Once you get into a real raiding guild, sure you’re going to be worried about best DPS and change to the best spec to help the guild, but for heroics and LFRs, there’s no such pressure.

Plus I’m sure a lot of people still have the vague notion from previous expansions that Arcane = Best DPS without actually doing research.

I haven’t used OpenRaid since Cata (I’m just at the point of scraping up enough gear for the LFR!), but when I used it, it was a crapshoot. If the group managed to form, it’d be good, but half the time it never got to that point.

As for your points on arcane mages? BM is the best hunter spec right now, but I’m staying in SV because I like it and understand what I’m doing. I can barely do the right attacks for myself, you want me to actually manage my pet now? Preposterous! :stuck_out_tongue:

The State of DPS in Mists of Pandaria article at Wow Insider may help.

Lucky drop yesterday, killed an elite and got the blue bag of treasures or whatever it is called, it contained 10 stacks of normal Pandaria Herbs plus 19 Golden Lotus. The random Gods smiled on me.

Our guild is starting to talk about doing some Raiding can anyone suggest some resources for getting started on raiding? I can find plenty of boss guides but not discussions on raid composition, for example how many healers do we need? Tanks? Melee and ranged DPS mix, if it matters?

By that article, BM hunters are the best hunters but not that much better than Survival; MM on the other hand is fucked up. Sometimes it’s important to know by how much A is better than B, and in this case it looks to me like someone who plays Survival smoothly but gets all finger-tangled as a BM should stick to Survival.

And yeah, I sure had noticed that my warlock (who isn’t even that fabulously equipped) wasn’t so much kicking the hunter’s ass as flattening it completely :pout:

That was the article that prompted my question. I respecced fire and played with it a little yesterday. I seem to do less dps as fire than I do as frost, but that may be in part due to me being more familiar with the frost rotation. In pvp, I seem to get more killing blows as fire, and it’s a fun spec. Nothing says loving like a big ass pyroblast to the face

Icy-veins.com is a good resource–they not only have good boss guides, but they’ll tell you about good compositions for each boss, what the role of each type (tank, DPS, heals) is, and lots of other useful info.

Usually you’re good with two tanks (one who has a DPS offspec for fights that only need one, but I think most/all of the MOP raid bosses need two so far), three healers, and five DPS, at least three of which are ranged. I haven’t been doing much raiding yet this expansion beyond LFR, but I’ve heard that it (as usual) is not melee-friendly, so you don’t want to bring too many melee. You can likely get away with four ranged and one melee, but I wouldn’t try bringing more than two. As you get more comfortable with a fight and your gear gets better, you can sometimes drop one healer in favor of another DPS, so it’s also good if one of your healers has a DPS offspec.

Oh, and going through LFR is helpful before you start the “normal” raid–the mechanics are dumbed down, but at least it will give you an idea of what the boss looks like and a general sense of what he does.

Thanks I use Icy Veins for rotations and transmog, didn’t even think of checking there for Raid data, :smack:

It’s pretty good, too. I’ve read raid boss articles and watched videos in the past, but never got a good sense of a boss fight until I’d been through it once or twice. I read the Elegon and Sha of Anger articles on Icy Veins once through and I feel confident I could handle either fight in any role. (My main is still 87, of course, so raiding won’t happen for a while.)

The WoW Gods are cruel. Two days ago, I spent my valor points on the ilvl489 pants from the Klaxxi. Also gemmed them and bought spell thread for them.

Want to guess what I got from using a bonus roll after a Sha kill tonight?

On the upside, I also got the quest starter for Remnants of Anger, which is a simple turn-in for boots, in my case Sandals of the Shadow

I got my first Sha kill too last week, epic boots are a nice bonus though I got no extra loot even after using a coin.

Anyone one else struggling a bit with the rep grind? Last few times I have logged on I have managed to do one set of dailies then sort of sat there not wanting to do anything. Very odd. I even rolled a Dwarf monk the other day thinking that dwarf monks would look awesome, I was right but this was a minor distraction only.

The chances of extra loot from the coin are quite small. Most of the time you’ll just get some gold. You can use the coins on the boss that drops that thing you really want though. I’m using my coins mainly on bosses that drop weapons or trinkets. Sha of Anger is also a good choice, since there’s a chance of tier gear and that awesome looking mount.

I struggled with the rep grinds too. Golden Lotus in particular is annoying, as there’s too many quests and you only get a tiny amount of rep from each quest. I’d recommend doing one faction at a time if you’re not in a hurry.

The next patch will also bring an item that lets you double your reputation gain account-wide when you have that faction at revered. You can also get an 8% reputation buff from the WoW anniversary for the next 2 weeks, and 10% reputation boost from the Pilgrim’s Bounty event right now. I’m waiting for the patch until leveling reputations past revered personally.

I think it was getting Revered with Golden Lotus that pushed me over the edge. Which is odd as I ground my way to the Crusader title back in the day and that took a while longer *and *included jousting.

Thanks for the reminder regarding the Pilgrim’s Bounty, I don’t bother with holidays and forget they can have bonuses.
