More August Botticelli

I think of this person as primarily a musician, but it should be noted that he’s known (and has received a major award) for another field as well.
Since we’re down to our last three DQs, if you wish to change yours in light of the above, etv, you may do so. I’ll be back in the morning…

IQ: Did he do an album under an alterego that tanked?

Biggie Smalls

I Shot the Sherrif was written by Bob Marley

Bryan Adams

No, I can’t think of usable DQ, so I let that 1 stand.

#1 is Elmer Bernstein.
#2 is Leonard Bernstein. (The two were not related, though they knew each other and even looked alike. They were referred to as Bernstein West and Bernstein East, respectively, for their preferred locales.)
#3. I was referring specifically to the scene where Cleavon Little is riding through the desert to the tune of ‘April in Paris’, when he comes upon Count Basie and the band playing. Basie gets up and he gives him five, and a thumbs up. I’ll leave it to your judgement if that rates a third DQ.

DQ1: The other field in which you have received an award, was it also related to The Arts?
DQ2: Primarily known as an instrumentalist? (As opposed to a singer…)

B

  1. ‘B’ is not the initial of my last name
  2. Real
  3. Male
  4. American
  5. Dead
  6. In the Arts
  7. Died after 1900
  8. Known for music, but also known (and has received an award) for another field
  9. Died after 1970
  10. Not known for rock and roll
  11. Not known for classical music
  12. Not best known for country music, but had some country/crossover hits*
  13. Not born after 1950
  14. Died of natural causes
  15. Did not die after 2000
  16. Not best known as a songwriter/composer
  17. Grammy winner*
  18. Not in a Musical Hall of Fame (though he is in another Hall of Fame)
  19. Other field for which award was received is also related to the Arts
  20. Not primarily known as an instrumentalist

Draelin still has two reserved DQs, but appears to have been kidnapped by a UFO. At any rate, we’ve reached 20, so discuss it a bit. Each person who has been given a DQ (including Draelin) may ask one more DQ, in the form of “Are you [specfic name]?”

  • Although he’s not best known for country music, it seems he received his Grammy for a country song.

Not that I’m aware of.

Wow! It’s been busy overnight.
Shot in the dark time:
Are you Burl Ives?

Are you B.B. King?

Got to admit, this one has/had me stumped…

I suspect this is it.

Not dead! Whew. Scared me for a second there.

Yes, I am indeed Oscar-winning* actor and Grammy-winning** folk singer

Burl Ives

Good guess, Professor!

  • Best Supporting Actor, 1958, The Big Country
** Best Country and Western Recording, 1963, “Funny Way of Laughin’”

Another question: Would you classify professional “wrestlers” (Leapin’ Larry Shane, Man Mountain Cannon, Hulk Hogan, Rowdy Roddy Piper, &c) as sporting figures or as actors/entertainers?

Actually, I thought he might have had an Emmy for Rudolph.
Anywho,

I am W !

I’d classify the wrestlers as entertainers, but I could see where you could make a case for them as sports figures.

I’d call them entertainers, too. I was just wondering if there was anyone who would call them sports figures.

IQ1: Are you a 20th-century ruler with a withered arm?
IQ2: Did you sell the Russians information on Navy communications?
IQ3: Are you a doctor for whom a Midwestern fort was named?

Olympic wrestlers, yes, but not Hollywood Hulk Hogan.

And I’m off to a rousing start… take 3 DQs.

Congrats, Prof. P.!

Yes, I’d say pro wrestlers are more entertainers than sports figures, but an argument could be made for both.

From the previous round:

Bob Hoskins, in The Long Good Friday.
Yes, Jeff Bezos.
Bram Stoker, author of Dracula.

IQs:

Did you promise your constituents not to run for a higher office, but then did it anyway?
Were you painted standing next to a table that’s still in the house where you used to live?
Did you have to borrow money from a neighbor before starting your important new job?

#1 I’m gonna guess is Warren G. Harding. Take 2 DQs for the other two.

IQ1: Did you follow your father after eight years?
IQ2: Were you the victor at Stirling Bridge?
IQ3: Were you a contemporary of Darwin who come close to independently making Darwin’s most famous discovery?

I’m not William Wallace.
I’m not Alfred Russell Wallace.

Take one DQ.

Correct on 2 and 3, 1 was the man frequently referred to as just “W”, George W Bush, who succeeded his father as US President, separated by the 8 year Clinton administration.
