Hmm. Not the heroine, British, first name started with D, an American comedy made between 1950-1990. Not part of a series; no sequel.
Maggie Smith? She was in Murder by Death and The Missionary, off the top of my head, but I don’t remember her character’s names.
Glenda Jackson was another British comedic actress of the period. But it’s not A Touch of Class, so I’m still guessing.
Julie Andrews?
Right, that calls to mind S.O.B. and 10 and the other Blake Edwards films I laughed at but don’t recall the names of the casts.
Another complication: Look over the answered DQs again. The character could have been played by an actor in drag. Alec Guiness, the Monty Python cast and Peter Sellers spring to mind in that timeframe.
Which, in turn, calls to mind Dustin Hoffman as Dorothy Michaels in Tootsie. But Dorothy was from the Southern US.
Now a character who is fictional within the context of the movie, like Dustin Hoffman as Michael Dorsey as Dorothy Michaels, would be fiendish.
I will tell you that this is definitely not the answer, although I kinda wish I’d thought of it. 
I’m ready to call it quits. Consider me stumped.

Don’t look at me - I didn’t even know Maggie Smith was in that movie until somebody mentioned it a day or two back. I just looked back through the talk posts until I saw something that had enough information to base a question on.
Hmmmm. I was going to do a D, but I think I’ll wait a bit for that. I’ll post something tomorrow…
