More cartoon help needed...

After reading the great thread started by pezpunk, I was reminded of a cartoon I’ve been trying to think of for years. It’s about a goose and a cat (?) who were always going ‘into’ a book on an adventure. Nobody I talk to even remembers this one, but it was always one of my faves. A little spooky… no…uh, well weird. The goose had a high pitched voice and the cat had a growly (?) voice. It’s old. Any takers?
Also, and I’m dating myself here, anyone remember ‘Pow-wow the Indian Boy’? (loved all the animals in the woods).
Thanks in advance…
Steve

No one, really?

Sorry.
Sure it all wasn’t just some horrible dream?

warmgun: The only advantage to getting old is that you sometimes have the answers. Not that I’d take getting old over being young.

You’re thinking of the characters Sarge (the cat) and Gandy (the goose). They were done by, I believe, the Terrytoons company, who later went on to do Heckle & Jeckle and Herman and Katnip. Yeah, they were weird, and they didn’t make many of them. I’m thinking they were done in the LATE thirties, because: (1) Sarge and Gandy were WWI veterans, by their costumes and relationship; and (2) they were done in color. They had that peculiar opium dream quality that a lot of cartoons of that era had. Sarge’s “growly” voice was an impersonation of Jimmy Durante’s voice, and that same impersonation was used later for either Heckle or Jeckle.

Now, do you remember Gabby cartoons? Gabby made his first appearance in the Fleischer film, “Gulliver’s Travels.”

Was Gabby a goat? A character by that name was teamed with Porky Pig in a few Warner Brothers cartoons, but dropped and for a while PP was paired up with Daffy Duck a lot. In fact, a PP/Gabby cartoon in black and white was later remade in color, with Daffy in the Gabby role.

I have a feeling warmgun may be conflating two different cartoon series.

I don’t know the actual names of the characters (cat and goose) pugluvr mentioned, but I do remember seeing one particular cartoon of theirs several times - a metal scrap drive promotion, which would have put them firmly in the early WWII era. And they were a Terrytoons creation. WLVI Channel 56 used to play it a lot during their “Mighty Mouse” half-hour weekday afternoons.

As for going ‘into’ the books on adventures, that seriously sounds like Art Clokey’s Gumby to me. Later period of time (60s and 70s), and using Claymation.

I’m no cartoon expert, for sure, but I can’t think of another animated series based on that premise. Warner Brothers did several “Battle of the Books”-type cartoons where the characters or titles of the books came alive at night, but that’s the only other thing I can think of.

The Cartoonopedia link I provided in pezpunk’s thread might be a good resource for searching to see if anything else comes up.

Olentzero: Yeah, Mighty Mouse must have been where I the Sarge and Gandy cartoons. I also do not remember them going “into” a book, but I do remember them having dreams of things like traveling to China and whatnot.

Baker: That goat character you’re thinking of was named Gabby in one cartoon, and Dippy in another. Too bad he was so short-lived, because he was funny. But the Gabby I’m thinking of was the short, red-haired, self-important little guy who was the mouthy town crier in “Gulliver’s Travels” and was so popular that they did a few short cartoons in which he starred. I’ve only seen one or two, and they were done by the Fleischer people.
