I was reading up on Mongolia and found out that it was kind of forced to be communist but since has become a Republic. SInce they were last riled by the Qing Dynasty, that would make the pretender to the throne Yu-zhang. That started me thinking. I wonder if there is any chance he will be asked to take the Mongolian throne?
We have had a few thread on the probability of European pretenders regaining the throne. But let’s expand that worldwide. Are there any monarchist movements going on right now? I would think the most likely is Greece (yes I know that’s Europe) given that I think there has always been an undercurrent of returning the monarchy and as bad off as Greece is right now, why not?
Regarding Mongolia, the ninth Jebtsundamba Khutuktu just died a few years ago. His next reincarnation, as far as I know, hasn’t been confirmed, but if it is, then he’d have a claim to ruler of Mongolia.
There was some talk about restoring the monarchy in Bulgaria when communist control collapsed in 1991. It actually got to the point where there was a national referendum to vote on it. The result obviously was Bulgaria stayed a republic.
Then things got a little strange. Tsar Simeon II, who was the legal claimant to the Bulgarian throne, formed a political party and ran for office as Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. He did quite well - enough so that he was elected Prime Minister in 2001. And as Prime Minister he swore to defend Bulgaria’s republican form of government.
The Greek royal family derived from a cadet branch of the Danish royal family. (The Greek nationalists had wanted an British prince to be their king, in the hope this would keep them protected by the powerful British Empire. This was rejected by the UK and other European powers as a bad idea.) I don’t get the impression that the Birthplace of Democracy[sup]TM[/sup] is all that fond of them or want them back.
The Greek Supreme Court has refused to even let National Hope (a monarchist party) on the ballot in recent elections. cite: Print - Taki's Magazine
