They must be wondering when it will all end. And right before Christmas too.
Oh man…
I had the same reaction.
USGS maps look like the quake epicenter was off shore. Hope there is not a tidal wave traveling around the Pacific.
My understanding is 6.0 magnitude is too small to create a tsunami.
sigh
I’m actually kinda hoping this quake will have done some more damage to my parent’s house. They’ve been in limbo since February, with no decision made on whether their house needs to come down or can be repaired. Meanwhile, a wall in the lounge has been slowly moving outwards…
Christchurchian signing in. Talk about spoiling our work drinks this afternoon. It was hard to run during the 5.8 (the first big one today) because the ground was literally lurching underneath my feet. For the 6.0 an hour later, I was lying on a beanbag with a dog on my lap and we clung to each other for dear life.
Aren’t 6.0’s relatively small?
In Chch here as well.
Put a bit of a damper on my nieces first birthday party as everyone jumped into cars to check on their houses.
Our place fine, a few broken glasses and a few more cracks in the already stuffed foundations and a bit more cracking to the walls inside.
Parents in law’s place has liquifaction inside (for the third time) but not to bad so a days hard work should get it cleaned up in time for christmas.
The real damage is to people’s nerves. The past few months the quakes had really eased off and people had decided it was all over. Now its back to wondering if it’ll ever end.
The second big issue is insurance. This means another big wait until insurance for new homes which delays the rebuild.
Depends on depth and how close you are.
I was driving during the 6.0 yesterday and it felt like a wheel had come off the car.
There’s a chart here that gives a good explanation of what Richter scale numbers mean.
The issue with the Chch quakes is not the magnitude but rather that the epicentre has been pretty much in a highly populated area. That and we have now just had our fourth major quake in just over a year.
Called my friends in Christchurch and they have been without water since this most recent hit. Not everywhere without running water - just their neighborhood. Supposed to be fixed this week. They are still waiting for repairs from the last round of earthquakes, and that can supposedly take years before they get that far on the list.
I met them (and actually introduced them) back when we were all living in Germany and joked, “Who’d have thought living in West Berlin, two blocks from the Moabit Prison, surrounded by East Germany, would be the safest place the two of you have ever lived…”
Hoping all goes well for you from now on, we’re all with you in spirit.
