Why won't these damn aftershocks stop!

I live in Christchurch, New Zealand on 4th September we had a very big earthquake magnitude 7.1, since then we have had over 1500 aftershocks and they dont seem to be slowing down just last night we had a 5.0 and they are starting all over the country. I am so freaked out and cannot sleep at all and im always on alert i’ve had enough and just want them to go away.:eek:

This site shows a list of the most recent and has other infomation but I suppose you could always google it

http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/recent_quakes.html

You would think something like that would be mentioned on the news here. I don’t recall much, if anything, being mentioned.

probably cause no-one was killed (thankfully) it happend at abound 4.47 am. Tons of damage, i live in the worst hit part of town, our sewers will not be fixed for months and months we have to use portaloo that is outside on the footpath, there are heaps of them in my area. Just wish they would stop

Cluster quakes in this area been going on for over a year.
Despite leading participants to believe that their particular chunk of dirt is getting ready to fall into the sea, long clusters are pretty standard stuff along rough plate boundries.

Perhaps it’s a reminder that you happen to live in a very seismically active place. When I lived in California I used to welcome after shocks because I thought that it meant that pressure was being released and that there was less chance of a big one occurring. I don’t think it’s quite a simple as that, but I eventually got used to them.

Volcanoes. New Zealand is going to get Mount Doom for real this time.

What a pain. Sounds like a good time to switch to greywater recycling systems and composting toilets.

New Zealand’s Taupo Volcano erupted 26,500 years ago; it was the largest known eruption in the last 70,000 years. Just saying.

gee thanks, you making me feel much better!

Hmph, we got the news here in Au about the quake, but not much about the continuing aftershocks. In fact hadn’t heard anything about it for at least since the beginning of the commonwealth.

Sorry to here that.

I really hope they settle down soon, it must be so stressful for you guys at the moment. I know my mum has really had enough of it, as she is quite a nervous person at the best of times and being awoken by a 5.0 earthquake in the middle of the night does not help.

Have you been into the city at all, David? My husband and I are coming home in May, and I’m wondering what the city will look like by then. Did the Arts Centre get any damage? Or buildings around the Square?

Hang in there D-NZ. It sounds absolutely awful. I hope you’ll talk to your Doctor about this.
The constant adrenaline rush and the “hunted” feeling can lead to PTSD if you don’t address it now. Fortunately it is fairly easy to address if you do it early/during.

What is the culture like there? are friends and neighbors talking openly about the stress and fear, or is it a more macho thing where they complain about the effects but hide the feelings?

Anyway, if it helps at all, we’re pulling for you.

the arts centre seems to be alright I was there acouple of weeks ago with a friend was quite funny cause in one of the shops the had animal fur, puossum tails and stuff it felt so soft but she would not touch it lol, yeah around the square you will notice a bit of difference also down manchester street, cookers is still closed not sure what going to happen also by the strip alot fenced off because of awaiting demo its really strange to see cant remember the name but it a big heritage building needs to be demolished as well. stayed at the crown plaza for a night and alot of rooms were not available was not until the next morning after checkout there were cracks up the wall. I live in dallington at very old house we not in good place. I say it will look alot different down the main streets but if you drive around the suburbas some are fenced off for residents only and especially over the east side of the city portaloos everywhere. Its a damn shame, but you can still go get a beer at the Dux next to the arts centre. the tram is back up and running, just going to take time but when you get back expect to feel a few aftershocks at some point. also I hope your mum is doing ok I know how she feels, my mum is in woolston she handles it better than me she has been my rock. best wishes David.

Hey thanks for the concern, yeah I have been to the doc, it helps but u know it still there just numbed a little. We have many cultures here in NZ mostly Maori and European people here but also many many others, we are a great melting pot of culture which is cool, in Christchurch we have the Chinese lantern festival every year it is very cool to go a see. People have been very helpfull. There was a facebook campaign put out by students to lend a hand and over 300 turned out and were working very hard just helping people clean up do washing get water etc, it really showed the caring nature of people here. All neighbours surrounding this house have left and not been back since the big one, dont blame them i would be gone if I had somwhere else to go. I think very small amount of people are hiding their feelings, there are adds on tv that say somepeople cope in different ways but if you unsure go see you doctor, i did was a bit late in doing so but glad i did. Cheers for the support, it REALLY does help!

just another update More aftershocks shake Christchurch - NZ Herald

I remember they went for months after the Northridge quake. There was even a 5-ish one in March and the quake had been in January! There are huge forces at work in big quakes and it takes time for everything to resettle down, I suppose.

It does suck. You have my sympathy. I did get pretty good at estimating their magnitude, though I’m long out of practice these days.

same i play the gussing thing too i get pretty close , i think it does help a bit to calm the nerves but tell ya what im sick of sleeping in my clothes with bag ready to go but i cant help it hopefully soon i can get a decent sleep but till then i am gonna stay as strong as i can.
cheers mate, also please im not a religious person but please send out good thoughts for the others too, they have lost way more than me, just wish i could deal with it like they do man there are some very strong people out there

Magnitude: 4.0

Depth: 25 km

Details: 20 km north-west of Gisborne

I reckon we are gonna fall apart and their is not enough duct tape to put us back together! and to the people who mention volcanoes, yes we have many but i hope they stay quiet and not cause more sh*t than we need! life can be so unpredictable

Life finds a way. Whatever happens, you are going to be all right. You may have to move, or have a lot of re-building to do. You may find you have a new sort of life, and that might turn out to be a good thing. we just can’t know.

Try to just assume that life will be different from now on, and accept that as reality. Then you can stop worrying about the changes and focus on what it is you’d like to build on the other side of this.

We seldom get such a chance to make sweeping changes. If I could go back two weeks ago, and ask you what you’d like to change about your life, what would you have said? What opportunities do you now have for addresing those aspects?

I guess what I’m trying to say is, focus on what you want to build, not on what you’re afraid might fall down next.

Thank you, im trying, its not easy but yeah got no choice, sux living in fear. Just gonna take each day as it comes
