This is why everybody should be in the SCA. That way, you can dress up in medieval formalwear and make everybody guess.
Go in a suit…of plate mail 
I would enter wearing a classy suit and then maybe strategically shed an item or two if I must. In my experience, some people who have overly casual events are mostly just afraid of alienating their blue collar friends!
