Morgan for a girl? Like/dislike?

I like Alexandra

I think Morgan is a very nice name for a daughter. It’s been in the top 50 for some time.

Here’s a link to first name popularity:

Here are two female names almost never used that I like - Kismet, who I know and Mahala, the name of a gggrandmother. The latter name was popular in the US about 1820.

Keep in mind, that for most of her life, most people will be calling her by a shortened version of her name(most people say Matt instead of matthew, bill instead of william, chelse instead of chelsea, etc) :

She will be called: Morg, morgi, or whatever.

I like Alexandra and Kendall best. (I’m not wild about Morgan, but that may be because my lush of an uncle was named that, so you may safely ignore me.)

We are having an awful time coming up with a girl name, and we only have a few weeks to go. Help!

I vote for Alexandra. That will be my daughter’s name (if I have one). And Alexandra Ivanna sounds so pleasing to the ear… say it aloud a few times.

Although, ** FairyChatMom **, the “Barbara” idea has now entered my mind. That’s my mom’s name, and perhaps I might name my future daughter after her… She would certainly stand out in her class at school, as opposed to having a trendy name.

Morgan is a very beautiful name.

Of course it isn’t. As had been previously mentioned, it was used as a first name at least as far back as Sir Thomas Mallory’s “Le Morte D’Arthur” in the 15th century, the character Morgan Le Fay.

I like the name. I had a thing for Morgan Fairchild. She still looks pretty good in those ads too.

I have never known a Morgan to be called anything but Morgan… unless they’ve requested it, like “yes, but my friends call me…”

Can’t say I like it. A good rule of thumb: If it’s a last name, don’t use it to name your daughter. And yeah, that includes “Kelly.”

“Morgan” is a bad name for a girl, trendy or not. It doesn’t sound or look pretty. It’s masculine and kind of ugly.

Well, maybe not her body, but who knows what damage might have been done to her mind?

Morgan means “Born from the sea”. It would be a perfect name if she was a Pisces.

Yes, it’s Pisces time again.

I recommend using the form Morgaine. It can’t be confused with the horse, the boy’s name, or the surname. It can only be a girl’s name. It’s the form of the name used in a terrific Arthurian book, The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. If you use Morgaine, it will be uniquely a girl’s name and uniquely referring to the Arthurian character. Go with it.

Morgan is an absolutely beautiful name.

Morgaine is also the name of the lead character of a CJ Cherryh trilogy. Can recall the name of the books. The other main character was named Vanye.

I don’t really dig ‘Morgan’, honestly. I’m more into the ‘Alexandra Ivanna’ thing… It sounds regal.

My 22 year-old sister’s name is one of the above, so yes.

When I was about seven, I loved the name Jezebel. That was, of course, before I’d heard the story of Queen Jezebel. :smack:

Okay, here’s an idea: I already expressed my discomfort with “Morgan” because of the witchy Morgan Le Fey connection. How about Morgiana/Marjana instead? She’s a character from the Arabian Nights: beauty AND brains! Killed the Forty Thieves all by herself while the men in the story dithered helplessly.

The name Marjânah in ‘Ali Baba has no connection with the Celtic name Morgan. It’s the Arabic word for ‘coral’. Some early translator of the Nights screwed with the spelling and came up with “Morgiana” which always gets mispronounced (because it’s misspelled).

I always liked her a lot, though.

I don’t think you can go wrong with either Morgan or Alexandra.

Dislike Morgan.

I am the honorary aunt to a five-month-old Alexandra, so you might say I’m prejudiced.

Please please please avoid any really trendy name. And avoid names with weird spellings.

I don’t mind Morgan too much, though I don’t think it’s terribly feminine, but IMO it’s better than Madison or McKenna, spellings may (and do, oy vay) vary. My parents went with pretty traditional names and I’ve never been anything but happy about it. The whole “last name as first name” thing for little girls bugs the heck out of me.

I REALLY like Alexandra.
