I was having a conversation with a friend and the subject of the LDS came up. He said that a friend of his (a mormon) was joking with him about being converted because he spent so much time in the LDS geneology sites. My friends response was that he couldn’t because he liked wine and didn’t wear underwear. I quess there is supposed to be some kind of special ‘Mormon Underwear’ What in the world is it? or is this some strange joke?
yeah, they wear some sort of neck to knee under-garment. It must go against the skin only, so regular underwear must be worn over the top of it.
on top of that, if a person of the opposite sex touches that underwear, and they are not that persons husband/wife, it must be washed in Holy water (?) and then destroyed by being burnt.
I only know this after a bit of an experience which occured in our local A&E Dept. at the hospital. A mormon pastor (?) collapsed unconscious, and the nurse at the time was told she wasn’t allowed to treat him by the other mormon that was there. Was told the reason being later. bit strange…I personally cannot see how wearing a special underwear can be benificial to your spiritual well-being!
Of course, I’m sure there is some resident mormon doper who could shed a little more light on the subject!
A good site for information about the practices and beliefs of the Latter Day Saints church is www.mormons.org. On it you can find a discussion of the LDS Sacred Garments.
On a more practical note, a good friend of mine is LDS. The garments he usually wears look just like ordinary white T-shirts and underwear, except that they have small symbols discretely embroidered in a few places. His wife usually wears a thin undershirt like a camisole, and I haven’s seen what she wears below :). They can get them in various patterns and materials.
They will wear them at all times, except when swimming, playing sports, bathing, or similar times when it would be impractical. It usually just looks like he is wearing a T-shirt, and you can’t really see her top at all under most shirts or dresses.
