Just looked at the box for emergency contraceptive “PlanB” Levonorgestral Tablets and saw that a prescription is needed for anyone under the age of 18.
On the box it states:
Wondering when California Law addressed this and wondering if it came from the State Legislature or if it came from the voters as a ballot measure.
Also, does this mean a 17 year old girl has to make a morning after doctor appointment with her family doctor, or can she get a prescription by walking into a Planned Parenthood office (again, asking about the law in the State of California)?
It just means that a minor needs a doctor’s sign off. There is no requirement for parental notifican. The logic being that a minor cannot make educated decisions alone and that a doctor is sufficiently knowledgable to help make that decision and determine if the drug is suitable.
Also, slight nitpick, it isn’t a matter of California law, it is actually a federal issue. Plan B is Rx only for anyone 16 or younger, and OTC for 17 and older. ID is required. So you can buy it legally if you are 17 years old, doesn’t need to be 18.
Also, it isn’t a matter of male of female. A male over 17 can buy it just as much as anyone.
