I’ll play Shepherd’s Bush, which I believe makes the Central line wild for three turns in some versions of the rules.
You’re right, and IMO **DiggitCamara ** was being too harsh. He was referring to your (marginally) illegal move to Burnt Oak. This is due to the triple-consonant rule, similar (but not identical) to the double-vowel violation mentioned by ianzin:
If you’re new to the game you probably didn’t follow the playoffs for the Brooke-Taylor Shield. Malacandra, on the other hand, cannot be excused for making the same mistake with his choice of Goodge Street, with its triple-consonant. Malacandra, I would imagine you were thinking of Flay’s penultimate move (King’s Cross St. Pancras). Yes, after much debate that was allowed, but only because the possessive of ‘King’ effectively canceled the ‘ncr’ of Pancras. Obviously this was too recent to appear in Hobson’s, but somebody else may have a reference.
If ianzin allows this, I’ll use one of those turns skip to Tottenham Court Road.
Neasden.
Need I say more?
I am a true novice. I received my Grandfather’s dog eared copy of NF Stovold’s Mornington Crescent: Rules and Origins as a gift for flag day, and never thought I would have an opportunity to use it.
So as suggested in Appendix A, para ii, I will play **Hammersmith and City Line ** as a tribute to Daedilus (Gene, not Veerhoven) for the so called “fare hopper” gambit.
Sgt Schwartz
It took me a while cracking the password for the rules section of the official web site, but I think I finally got a handle on things now.
Quick question though. Is this a straight rules game? Now usually straight rules games can be modified of course, but seeing as it’s Sunday section 38 subpoint C clearly states that a certain rule set must be followed. As we all know, it’s inadmissible in a straight rules game to transfer inversely, so you can see where my confusion comes into play.
Having seen Sgt. Schwartz’s risky play, I think I’ll one up him and play Longwood. That should give us all something to think about.
Blue Mood, thank you for the compliment, but it’s never a case of whether I ‘allow’ anything. I’m just here (by agreement with Lynne-42) to offer a few observations here and there as play opens up. I don’t make up the rules - we’re sticking strictly to Hobson (7th) for this game.
Sunspace I understand it must sometimes seem as if the rule book has thousands of pages, but it’s really not so! Don’t forget, people often refer to revisions, annotations, different editions and so on, which can sometimes prove a little confusing to newcomers. It’s really not that complicated, and in any case many of the so-called rules only apply to very technical positions that seldom arise in formal play.
DiggitCamara I know that you were only pointing out a simple error, but nonetheless your tone towards Helen’s Eidolon was a little harsh. Please let us always play in a civil and amicable manner, as befits the dignity of the game.
Sgt Schwartz You cannot play an entire line. That’s nonsense.
We’re playing according to Hobson, 7th edition.
Normally, yes, but we have already had clockwise motion with reduced vowels, which is effectively the same thing as declaring snid. So it’s permitted.
SS tried to play an entire line. Not permitted. And ‘Longwood’ doesn’t exist.
Of course it does. Seeing as Boston was originally part of a colony, it follows that it’s merely a through-time extension of the London lines. Some purists dont play with such an advanced format, but shouldn’t we all be dedicating ourselves to play of the highest caliber? If you desire clarification, you’ll find time extensions described in full detail in Appendix F.
Look. I have been far too patient all this time (ianzin notwithstanding).
Don’t you understand there are newbies around here? It’s clear to me, that you are referring to “Hobson, 7th edition”, as published in Boston. That, clearly says to me you don’t understand that was an apocryphal version, banned in all civilised countries!
What do you think the war in Iraq was all about?
Sorry, Autolycus, but DiggitCamara is right. For this game, at least, we will be referring only to currently active stations found on the current London Underground map, as defined within Hobson (7th). You are, of course, very welcome to join in, or to start your own game in a separate thread.
Seems to me that the last legal move was GorillaMan with Neasden.
Drat, I had a couple of pages of my Stovold’s stuck together.
Excellent argument, Autolycus. I just did a quick search of the time-through extension. It is always a high value, but comes with the cost. Remember the Mannus expedition. (Was it '58, or '59?)
I will await until I can reenter the game. As per custom, I cannot state the play that will allow me back in, but I think logic (and per the Xung update 1983 pp67-214) will bring it up soon.
Sgt Schwartz
In an attempt to return this game to the right track, and allowing for beginners who are by now totally lost, might I put forth Boston Manor as a return to form and a sop to Autolycus?
Exactly. The index volume runs to about 800, but the rest is divided up into sensible-sized volumes. And it’s become a lot more accessible since they’ve started to included the magnification system to read the small type.
And in the SDMB spirit, I’ll nitpick, because you should have remembered when Godfrey St John Small made his decisive move in the Macau Cup qualifier, triggering the investigative committee to decree that it is indeed possible to play the Waterloo & City line in its entirety, provided that interchanges have been substituted and Monument is still placed in order.
But to get back on with things, I’ll take the Down Street advantage and reposition Autolycus to Green Park.
(On preview: remember, DiggitCamara, the controversy of the East London Line Extension Pluralisation Review’s decision about Forest Hill(s).)
Hi, my name is Inner Stickler and I am a newbie who is totally lost. In that spirit, can I suggest Aldwych?
Leaping in with both feet…
Dollis Hill!
'Kay, I found the basic rules online… So we have Down Street to Aldwych to Dollis Hill which means…Groan
This always happens on 55th move! Why, oh, why! Well… it cannot be helped…
I’ll try to break out: Goodge Street!
Why do you think I drink? I have been trying to forget that decision!
Ah…back on form I see. I’ll now play Snaresbrook since it is now dark in Greenwich.
Having actually played Aldwych, you leave yourself in danger of the Ongar peak-hours trap. You’re probably safe unless someone plays Mill Hill East or Chesham.
I’ll be sporting, and try to take things in a different direction, with Old Street.
