Morpheus- Has anyone else tried?

Has anyone else out there tried Morpehus to download music and other files? In my opinion it’s superior to Aimster. Aimster was so clunky feeling, and often cut off downloads in the middle because the uploader signed off. This resulted in lots of screwed up CD’s with half-songs. Morpheus, as far as I can tell, looks for the same file with many different users and then segments the download. That way, if one of the uploaders signs off, it’s no problem, it just looks for another one, or give that segment to one of the other uploaders. If that was the only person with that particular file, then it just pauses it until another person with that file shows up. Is there some horrible downside to it that I’m just completely missing or is it really that great?

Why do people persist in doing stupid stuff like this?

There is nothing wrong with this thread. No one is, say, talking about the violation of MPAA copyrights. This post was just soliciting opinions about a piece of software. It neither discusses nor encourages people to break the law.

Am I the only one to find these anticipatory countdowns pretty annoying?

I LOVE MORPHEUS! Great speed and easy to use.

Yes, Morpheus is good. I was using Audio Galaxy and before that Napigator. Audio Galaxy still has a better selection of music, but Morpheus has other media, is faster and has a better interface.

I may be wrong but am farily certain that Audio Galaxy has spyware. No spyware with Morpheus (early versions at least).

Okay, call me paranoid and a computer idiot, but I’m just really suspicious of sites where you can download music or movies for free. I mean, ain’t there a catch? Why would anyone give anything away for free? I tried to get on Morpheous today, and I typed the group I wanted, but it took it a long time. Then the computer’s virus/hacker protector program thing-y came on asking if Morpheous could be my server or some shit like that. Of course I said no and logged off. Whatever. I think that these sites are just fronts for hackers/businesses to better be able to hack into folks’ business because once you start downloading files, you have to open up your computers a little to receive them, thereby weakening to some degree your defenses and drawing the hackers’ attention to yourself. Okay, feel free to tell me how my suspicions are unfounded and that I need to stop being such a technophobe and come into the 21st Century.

Nope. I took the blue pill.

I haven’t cared for Morpheous too much… Rarely am I able to find what I’m looking for, and too often, all that comes up is pornographic. But heck, I’ll try anyhow.

Because the mods here have been 100% consistent with closing threads having anything to do with music file sharing software, regardless of its legality.

hey, i would like to warn you that this is a really dangerous thing to ask. it’s your first question, so you probably don’t have the rules down, but i will tell you…

the mods REALLY REALLY don’t like filesharing, as it is REALLY REALLY illegal. just to tell you… it goes verbal warning- ban in this type of subject… stay away… stay away…

so if I create a notepad document that says “Hi mom” and share it, that would be illegal? Please explain.

Now, whether the mods like it or not, that’s their business. It’s not my board to decide.

I just feel lucky to get to post on a thread that will be closed. I always get to them too late.

Like crashing a party that will soon be broken up!

Whatever you or I may think, it has become board policy in the last year or so to not allow any discussion of these types of programs. Simply, they’re worried that there’s a chance that it could lead to the Chicago Reader getting sued, so they lock them down just in case. Maybe this should be included in the FAQ…

At least, that’s my understanding of the policy.

If so, that’s a stupid policy. But hey, it’s not my sandbox, so whatever.

Also, as the Chicago Reader and Cecil Adams trade in intellectual property, they like to lend a hand in the protection of coprights.

I don’t think filesharing (of copyrighted material) counts as being “REALLY REALLY illegal.” Certainly, it’s no more illegal than murder, rape, theft, tax evasion, fraud, kidnapping, insider trading, prostitution, drug smuggling, assault, forgery, racketeering, extortion, driving while intoxicated, child pornography, public indecency, or any of a host of other crimes. Sure, if you get caught, they’ll make you sit on the Group W bench with the father killers and mother rapers, but you aren’t going to impress them.

I haven’t cared for Morpheous too much… Rarely am I able to find what I’m looking for, and too often, all that comes up is non-pornographic. But heck, I’ll try anyhow.

I for one, found Morpheus cuz of this thread. Weather the thread closed or not, I’ve been trying it, and I like it. Thx! I’ve found some small time rockers I’ve been looking for, and now I know what albums to buy.

My only recommendation would be to select the option of not sharing your own files on Morpheus. Before I did that, someone had downloaded my .pwl file.
Just be careful. You get what you pay for.

We strongly discourage these kinds of threads, but what we really disallow are links to download these programs.

File stealing programs (and be honest, mostly that’s what they are) violate copyright and intellectual property laws and we do not wish to traffic in that sort of thing.

You want to steal? You don’t give a rat’s ass for the rights of others? Your business, your conscience. Don’t put it on this board.
