They talk about pretty vs. cute, but I kind of parse it out as “Hollywood hot” and “regular girl” hot. Ginger/Mary Ann, Loni Anderson/Jan Smithers, etc. Most shows with two female leads have one each.
Was having a conversation this evening and a name came up of someone I haven’t thought of for a few years, Amy Acker.

That’s a product of makeup, though. You can take a beautiful actress and get any effect you want.
Women like Morena Baccarin, Mary Elizabeth Winstead or Kerry Washington are about as objectively beautiful as women can get. These are women that meet basically every contemporary standard of beauty. Professional makeup artists can make them look like any kind of hot the producer is looking for. To use Winstead as an example, she was famously geeky-cute in “Scott Pilgrim,” looks great as trashy femme fatale in “Fargo,” is smart hot in “The Thing,” and if you wanted her to play some glamorous 40s Hollywood star I’m sure you could pull it off. There’s a reason these ladies keep getting work; their hotness can be fit into any look.
She was really, really attractive back when she was doing movies in the '90s. I can’t really hold aging against her, but I agree that she lost a lot of weight. I’ve noticed this lately with a few actresses who used to be very attractive (and already very thin in many cases) and then lost a lot of weight. I see other guys calling them “hot” and I just see skin and bones. Another one that comes to mind is Jordana Brewster. Also happened to Jennifer Connelly at one point but I haven’t seen her in awhile.
