Most dangerous Sport

Recently someone told me that cross country horse riding is one of the most dangerous sports around. Is this true and what is the worlds most dangerous sport?

Bullriding? Cave diving? Luging? I reckon that cross-country riding is an afternoon tea party compared to these.

My vote for most dangerous team sport is hurling.

Dangerous in terms of fatalities of injuries per participant? Cheese rolling tends to mess up nearly everyone that takes part (including the crowd). Just goes to show people are dangerous when left to their own devices…

I thought Jai’lai (pronounced High-Lie) was widely considered to be the most dangerous sport?

How about Ultimate Fighting?
…ok not the most dangerous, but i bet it still hurts like a bitch.

I think that power boat racing is considered the most dangerous . . . . this site

http://cyberbuzz.gatech.edu/skydive/?page=stat

lists it as having 71 deaths per 100 000. I’m having trouble googleing for another source though . .

Previously discussed in this thread.

The most dangerous sport (in terms of average annual fatalities) in Australia is rock fishing

Ok. I should have know I should have been more specific.
For danger I am talking about fatalities per year.
As for Sport, I would not class rock fishing which is an occupation not a sport and Hurling is definately not the most dangerous sport in the world.

just ignore cheese rolling why don’t you

But fatalities per year isn’t a good statistic.
Russian roulette* is probably the most dangerous per participant (on average 1 in 6 die), but there aren’t many participants

Where walking probably has a very low death rate, but LOTS of participants

Brian
*I’m calling a sport, so there. And the calssic cartoon/movie version (put 1 bullet in a 6 shooter, spin, pull trigger)

Lawn darts.

Many people riding a large log as it skids down a steep and long hill. Saw it on a news clip. Anyone know what the activity is called and where it takes place?

Makes cheese rolling look safe.

Maybe the Afghan sport of buz kashi. For extreme he-men only. Usually produces injuries and not infrequently fatalities. That’s in the present day.

But the deadliest sport that ever was, hands down, would have to be the Mesoamerican game of “hit the ball through the hoop without using your hands.”

The losing team was ritually sacrificed.

But oddly enough, this apparently is safe:

If you mean “sport” to be an athletic endeavor as opposed to a contest between groups or individuals, it’s got to be climbing Mount Everest, hands down. About fifteen years ago, when traffic started climbing past one party ascending every year or two to several per year, the death-rate approached 20% . Now, with improved equipment it’s dropped to oh, 5 to 8%. Those guys are crazy.

Curling

While there are many “sports” which seem to be more dangerous simply because they are terrifying to many of us. I think bicycling probably results in the most accidents, injuries and fatalities than any other sport.

It is , of course , lawn bowls:
More people keel over and die playing this game than any other.

This may be related to an average participant age of 97 years old.

To see what some might consider TRULY ‘the most dangerous game’, see the story of the same name by Richard Connell…

sadly, it is quite apropos just now…
