And ask if mommy’s sleeping.
Because he returns studios’ investments in spades? I don’t like him, either, but the reason for his reputation as a draw is pretty self-evident.
I liked him actually , who I could have done without was shia lebouef( spelling , I know). Just give me Megan Fox as the lead character and be done with it.
Declan
But he was SUPPOSED to be annoying; his in-story appeal to his audience was SUPPOSED to be inexplicable. Complaining about Ruby being irritating is like complaining about LeeLoo being hot.
Ernie Hudson as the token black Ghostbuster.
I know why studios bank on him; what I can’t figure out is why people will go see a movie with Nicholas Cage in it, without consideration as to whether it may be any good; as in, “Hey, you wanna go see that new Nicholas Cage movie? I forget what the title is, but he plays a guy who sees ghosts or the future or something and is trying to recover the Dead Sea Scrolls from neo-Nazi mercenaries, so…it must be good, right?”
Stranger
Original script for episode 1? Where can I find that?
Yeah he did come off as kind of pointless but he also serves as an expositionary character for the more laymen audience. Chalk it up to non-stellar writing for his character.
But he’s not in a decent movie, as required by the OP.
Interestingly, I just came back from “Monsters Vs. Aliens” and have to agree with the nomination of Missing Link. He didn’t serve any purpose for advancing the plot, and his character arc was sort of abandoned. Actually, Dr. Cockroach was also underused, but Missing Link was pointless.
The movie was decent but it felt like they left four or five minutes’ worth of film on the cutting room floor that maybe would have served the movie well.
In the character’s (and actress’s) defense, that’s not really why she was crying. She was upset about why Butch had taken so long to return and his insistence that they had to get the fuck out of Dodge right away. Still, I think the earlier sequence depicting Butch and Fabienne’s relationship almost brings the movie to a … dead … stop.
When this movie came out, I remember seeing more than one review commenting that the character might’ve been a lot more tolerable if they’d cast Terri Garr in the role.
Incidentally, has anybody noticed that the lead female characters in the Indiana Jones movies have gotten steadily less likable with each successive entry? You start off with Raiders, where you have Karen Allen’s Marion whose everybody’s favorite spunky action-movie heroine. In Temple of Doom, however, Kate Capshaw, is grossly annoying and utterly useless even though she’s Indy’s romantic interest. In Last Crusade, the female lead, while still being involved with Indy, turns out to be a treacherous Nazi backstabber who was also boinking Indy’s dad. Finally, in **Kingdom of the Crystal Skull **(which, to be fair, I haven’t seen), you have Cate Blanchett’s Russian character who, up-front, is the main villain of the film and (I believe) has no sexual entanglements of any kind with Indy.
Yeesh. It’s been a long time since I read it.
Basically, the story is the same, but it’s not so…poorly directed and acted.
Anakin had a lot more dialogue when he meets Qui Gon and Padme. He comes off as a prodigy/genius kind of kid. Like an adult in a kid’s body. He’s more forceful and intelligent, not some silly kid pretending.
I’m trying to find Quin’t script review of it from before it came out. I read the script just after it came out and I see why people would think it would be good.
It’s been about 9 years since I saw it, though. I’m sure if you find one now, it will reflect the cuts in the movie.
Um… if it’s merely a screenplay, it’s not directed and acted at all.
Agreed. Someone needs to tell Bay that loud black people aren’t the peak of comedy.
I’ll nominate Andi MacDowell’s Carrie in Four Weddings and a Funeral. The movie is excellent in spite of her, which is remarkable considering she’s supposed to be the female romantic lead in a romantic comedy movie. But she’s just horrible…both the acting (“Is it still raining? I hadn’t noticed.” puke), and the writing which casts her as a person who cheats on her fiance, has a promiscuous sexual history, and registers for outrageously expensive wedding gifts.
But we’re supposed to love her because the lead character did. Not happening for me. I usually turn the movie off after Charles gets punched out at his non-wedding. Nothing worth seeing after that! (Well, okay…the end credits are pretty good. I guess I fast-forward to that part!)
Tombstone is one of my favorite movies but Wyatt’s love interest (Josephine) is execrable. She’s like a stomach punch in the middle of an otherwise surprisingly great film.
Also, a vague but needed nod to Adrianne in all the Rocky flicks. Her wallflower hater-ocity always bums me out.
If only this was Minnie Driver instead of Annie McDowell. In fact, if we could replace Annie McDowell with Minnie Driver, carte blanche, forever and ever, I’d be on board.
Also: Milton is fantastic.
That’s a fair point. I’d just like to say that I really enjoy Cage and I can’t say exactly why. He’s ineffable. I’ve seen people on this board champion Keanu and, for my money, gimme Cage every day and twice on Sunday. His awesome/awful performance in “Wickerman” alone is enough, but I’ll confess to enjoying him in “Gone in 60 Seconds” and, yes, “National Treasure.” His sycophantic sidekick in the “NT” movies is eye-gougingly horrendous though.
Okay. I’m done talking to myself now.
The problem is, he succeeded far too well in being annoying. It detracts from the film.
Complaining about Ruby being irritating is like complaining about LeeLoo being hot.
Hotness rather justifies itself.
Yep, first thing that popped into my head was Chris Tucker. I could almost love that movie.
Charles Martin Smith’s character in Starman.
